Default gearbox/transfer case "clunk"

hey guys,
i have had 3, series 1 discos and all three have a very audible "clunk" when shifting. is this a big deal? the only thing that stops me from taking it down to the garage is that all of the discos ive had make the same noise.
ideas?
cheers guys!

Taking up drive ? Selecting reverse ? Shifting gear ? Auto or Man. ?
Every Rover I ever had (not the latest models I have to add) have clunked in one way or another. It has never bothered me because none of them ever broke anything on the transmission.
The higher the mileage, the more play there will be on every gear.

It's probably the splines on the shaft that connect the gearbox to the transferbox.
Start saving to have it fixed or drive it untill it gives and fit a gearbox combo you've found somewhere in the mean time.

You can replace the stub shaft on the trans and get a new style input gear that is drilled for oiling

Check your transferbox number, if its starts with 36D it is not likely to be the input spline wear, however if it starts with 28D then more likely it could well be spline wear. The up grade gear is part No FTC5087 & the coupling is FTC 5090. They are easy to get at from PTO cover if you want to check them.

Start with the easy stuff first. Check your engine and transmission mounts.
