Default Hand Brake 200tdi - Quick Question

Hi,

Second post on the forums Ive searched but can't find anything relevant.

I have a 92 200tdi disco 1, and the hand brake lever only goes up about an inch, two clicks. I can get it up 3 clicks but they its really hard to get it off again.

Anyway after just one click, about half an inch, the hand brake light comes on.

I'm just wondering if this is normal for a 200tdi as a friend had a V8 and the hand brake on hers had a lot more play in the lever.

Anyway hope im making sense, just want to be sure its ok as ive spend a lot on getting it repared after I crashed it and want to be sure it isn't going to roll down a hill and land in a lake or over the side of a mountain lol.

Cheers, .. Jon.

So after 2/3 clicks of the rachet your brakes are firmly on then? Hell thats excellent!

If no-one on these forums can help try posting on this UK based forum.

IIRC you cannot get to the adjuster from the inside like the defender, you have to get underneath and adjust it from there. if you want a little more slack in the lever you can either turn the adjuster on the back of the brake drum (is a 10mm square lug), from underneath (head towards the engine feet towards the boot) anticlockwise is tighter and clockwise is looser. Or you can slacken off the cable adjuster which will be just behind/below the lever, the nuts are 19mm IIRC.

If you have a low slung disco you'll need a ramp to do this safely.

Hiya

Thanks for the reply. I havent had chance to stick it on a steep hill and test it since I got it back, before they fixed it even a slight hill and it would just roll back down as if the brake wasnt even on.

It goes one click and the light comes on, two clicks is pretty much as far as it goes.

It's been really well maintained and only had one previous owner, just wondered if two clicks was normal. I'm totally new to cars and Landrovers, due to take my second driving test next week.

Thanks for the advice I'll follow your instructions tonight see what I can see

Jon.

2 Clicks is fine as long as the transmission brake isn't binding, to check chock the front wheels take the hand brake off and jack up one wheel, spin it and see how free it is, if it appears there is something binding along the drive train it is most likely the transmission brake and it has been over tightened. In which case just back off the adjuster a turn and see what that does. It is a tad trial and error am affraid.

FYI I always put the LR in gear when parked on a hill so even if the brake fails to hold the vehicle the engine will no worries.
