Default Having trouble starting

Hello to all, I have a '96 Discovery with 2" lift and 30" tires. Last friday I took it through an extremely deep mud pit, water was up to the doors (some leaked in through into the interior ... not pretty) Anyway, I drove it about 20 miles, filled up with 89 octane, normally I put 91-93 in but i wanted to see how it would react. I drove it about 10 miles more to my friends house and left it running for about five minutes. I drove off to my house, another 10 miles, parked in my driveway, turned the car off and came back 5 minutes later. It normally starts after the first turn over but it took about 3 or 4 turn overs. It coughed and sputtered and died. I got it started again and as long as I was on the gas it would hesitate but not cut out. I began driving down the road and the further I got the worse it got. Numerous times i pulled over so people could pass.... it was a dog. It kept bucking and hesitating...very bad night. Finally it died out and I couldn't restart it. I got out and looked around, couldn't see much. I got back in and I got it running. I was able to limp it to a gas station. It died and I couldn't get it started again. Every now and then it would spit and sputter, sometimes run but quickly die out. Progressively it got worse and now it doesn't even cough. My buddy towed me home with his truck ...pros of living in the country ; ) I'm at school now, about an hour from home and I'm trying to get as much diagnostics done as I can so I can just get home and fix it. In my opinion it is either fuel pump, Stepper motor, fuel pressure switch on fuel rail, or ecu is wet. The strange thing is even driving through mild mud being extremely gentle it wants to idle rough afterwards for a few seconds. Something was wearing out and finally did or its just a british car and likes to make people think long and hard. I thank you for you help.

Chris

Hi Chris,

I would start with the fuel pump. You can also check for pressure at the fuel rail. MAF may make a good place to check next..

Sorry I havnt been back on here for awhile. It turns out that there were many faults with my Rover. #1 was the ECM/ECU. It was corroded and i guess there was a good amount of mud inside the actual computer. : D So with that said i need to find a way to mudproof/waterproof my ECM. Also the new ECM, when plugged in threw out about 12 different codes which were all solved with some di-electric grease. And after a new alternator the codes finally disappeared.
