Default Heat Shield

I just recently been feeling the area around my gear knob getting extremely hot- like around the P,R, D, D1 etc etc. We went underneath to check out why she was so loud in the first place and found a place that cracked all the way around on the pipe before you hit the muffler. So the whole cats piece was not affected but then suddenly that is when we felt the extreme heat up on the shifter. I have an automatic '94.
So we fitted a new piece on, just a small 5-6" extention because the muffler was fine. We then noticed that we did not see any heat shield on her at all! We've had this Disco for 3 years- that should have been something we noticed missing! It couldn't have just fallen off, or could it have without us noticing it?!
So the question is... isn't the shield above where the cats are.... why would it start heating up and even continue to heat up with that pipe all repaired and closed off?
This is blowing my mind!
Does anyone know where we can find a picture of where this shield is and where it's supposed to go? You would think it went where every other vehicle had one! We're looking for another replacement- maybe even a used one.

Is this heating up BEFORE the cat or after?

Its possible the catalytic convertor could be plugged and providing some restriction. They do heat up when they are plugged.

there was a weird rattle when I was just starting from a stop. I am not sure it was a cat but that is what it is sounding more and more like.
The heat came after the rattling noise and the noise has been going on since Christmas. It seems when the exhaust system is touched, it will stop rattling for about the first 15 mins worth of driving, then it comes back each time!
Any help or ideas would be appreciated- we've done all we could think of so far.
