Red face help me.. 95 disco MT

hey i just bought this guy. he's pretty dang awesome and so far im happy with him. i didnt pay too much for him so granted there are a couple minor issues.. one o fthem is that i noticed that from 1st to second sometimes there is a slight grinding. this doesnt happen all the time, just when i dont do it nice and slow.. i was told this could be the gear fluid in transmission..

unfortunately i dont have the owners manual and im not ready to pay $50 for it yet (if i could even find one) does anyone know what other issues this could be? and if it could be the gear fluid, what kind does my rover use?

he's a 95 disco with 5 speed manual transmission

this is my first suv.. i drove a cute e30 bmw before this so this is all new to me. thank you so much for your help

Changing your trans fluid may help,so might changing your fluid in the Master/Slave system, but that SOUNDS like a worn thorwout bearing/Pilot bushing...

Hard to tell online though, thats somethign that needs to be looked at.

I have a 96 5-speed with 200k on it. It's no Hurst speed shifter. Mine will grind under 2 conditions. A) if I don't pause for a split second or B) if I don't put the clutch in ALL the way or close to it. I notice this more when in low range, but a little pause always takes care of the problem.

The manual attributes this to the clutch sticking for a second before it releases. Could be worn out syncros too.

I can't fathom the u-joints having anything to to with how the transmission shifts.

fitch110: Our 96 5 spd showed the same symptoms on the test drive when we were buying it brand new. According to the mechanic at the dealership this problem is mostly caused by the large gears in the ZF tranny. He said they have a greater inertia due to their large mass and so don't change speeds quickly. You will notice that when the transmission is really cold (below -30C) the first to second shift is very stiff indeed and you will get that little grind. Just drive it like an (old time) truck and not some modern crossover ute that has a car transmission. I'll bet you like the clutch - ours, still original, is the best/smoothest clutch i have ever used.
