Default hey

Just saying hello. Just inherited my dads 97 Disco I with 5 speed....when he upgraded to an 04 Disco Classic (not a Disco 2)

Anyway it needs some work, and i'm looking to see where I would be able to find some engine parts and some transmission parts (which I hear are hard to find)

I'd love to start driving it (brakes are first on list to get worked on--new pads)

Cya!

There are a lot of good places... do you know what you need specifically?

I could use a good used engine (i haven't even looked at this engine yet)....

Also, 2nd gear synchros are out... I would assume that it would then require some sort of total rebuild of sorts.

I'm located in KY, and we have a dealer, I just heard that rebuilt engines are well over 3500 bucks, and I think my engine (which was 200k on it) needs a re-ring and a reseal. (never overheated to my knowledge ever)

My father (who I got the car from) is more of the 'run it till it pops' person. I'm more of the 'i hate being on the side of the road' person. However, when do these engines die?

Oil press low at idle, still runs, needs to be resealed. 200k on the clock, more highway miles than street. Maybe I should take the heads off and look and see if the sleeves slipped in the bores? (visualizing chewed up piston rings)

if the engine pressure is low at idle make sure the belt is correct, secondly, take off the pan and really clean out the intake really well.

to properly tell what the rings or cylinders are like you have to use a compression tester with a guage hooked to it tell you how much leakdown you have and then shoot some air into the cylinder and listen for the noise.

its a leakdown tester. really expensive and you need shop air as well.

You have a fairly rare beast with a manual 97, where are you located in KY? If in Louisville area, I wouldn't mind checking that truck out.

????? ??????, X3 on the "correct belt" and a compression test and a cylinder leak down test are two seperate tests and involve more than shooting "shop air" into a cylinder and listening for noise

a compression test tells you what cylinder is bad, a cylinder leakdown test fills the bad cylinder up with airand you then listen for the sound of escaping air. had a guy with a bad injector that hydrolocked the motor and scrapped the lower cylinder walls.

Ive seen a combination of factors including misrouted belts that can cause low idles to a point the oil light comes on. very rare but get someone that screws up a bit with a few other factors and it has happened. of course, of course if you dad dont like changing the oil and the sludge hasnt killed the pump then it could be a possibility of something worse.

my dad has an 04 rover. I guess its' a disco2

I live in Louisville, so Badger1 PM me and you can come to check it out.

Yes indeed, manual 97. First car I learned how to drive stick in.

It needs some TLC but i think its going to be well worth it (last project was a 1974 Porsche 914--was my DD)

I'm also looking for a good used engine, I think this needs to be rebuilt or just cleaned out. I heard something about using ATF to clean sludge out, running the engine @ idle for 30 min. I'm nervous about that, but I also think there some oil sludge in it.
