Personal opinion, don't use ATF. Use a good engine oil flush product and follow the directions on the bottle. Then use a good quality, High detergent, motor oil and do frequent oil changes for a few months.

bd1308: what's the condition of the body and frame? Even though you got this Disco for free, at 200k miles she's ending the autumn of her life. You could easily spend a ton of money on her for very little return. Don't get me wrong, the rebuild process could be fun and very educational. Just do a careful cost/benefit analysis. What about going exotic and putting in a good used Mercedes 300 turbo diesel - I believe they fit.... meanwhile could you drive the 'Old Man's '04 occasionally?

Plenty of places to find 5speed parts. As for motors you could find a low/er mileage GEMS motor and just swap it out, or rebuild it. Plenty of parts and suppliers out there to do a rebuild, and while your at it you could swap in a hotter cam for a bit more oomph.
As for keeping the truck, hell I would keep it just for the sentimental aspect, not to mention it is pretty neat having a 97 D1 in a 5speed. As long as the frame is in good shape, your sitting pretty, if not find yourself a donor truck with a good frame and swap. That was done on my wifes D2(albeit by the dealer under warranty )!

Body is in great shape, most suspension parts already rebuilt.
I learned 5spd on a 1974 Porsche 914 (my previous car), I now have a mazda protege to drive everyday, the disco is a project/fun car. Dad broke the rear window for the third time....I saw something on discoweb about repairing teh rear window regaulator piece by using nylon washers? |

While your doing brake pads, you will also want to renew the brake fluid too. With the amount of miles you might want to replace the flexible brake lines with braided ss ones.

well that mercedes 300 engine sounds intresting, but i'd really prefer to stick with the rover engine for now. I suppose my arm could be twisted if there was a substantial increase in mileage, but that rover engine does sound cool.
