My name is Ben and I'm a 21 year old 4th year Mechanical Engineering student at the University of California in Santa Barbara. I've been into cars as long as I can remember, and have spent the last few years tinkering with my Twin Turbo 300ZX. I decided I have done just about as much as I wanted to with it, and needed to find a new project.
I decided to go to the completely opposite end of the vehicle spectrum and try my luck with off-roading! Last Wednesday I picked up a mint 1999 Disco Series I with 80k on the clock for $6,900. I though that deal was too good to pass up, way below BB. I've been doing research on this forum and others for the last few days almost nonstop, and I just had new tires put on this morning. I went with 265/75 R16 BFG A/T's. I'm planning to install a 2" OME or RTE lift on in the next few weeks. Any recommendation as to which kit to go with? After that, I can't wait to get into other parts (bumpers, lights, etc). A good friend of mine has an upgraded '89 Ranger Rover, so we're going to do some "exploring" in early January, after we're all back from Christmas break. I’m excited to join the Land Rover enthusiast community, and look forward to learning a lot! Enjoy the pictures. ![]() ![]() ![]() And a picture of my other car, for those who are interested: ![]() |

Welcome Ben. Your DI looks great, enjoy it. You seem very proud of your purchase and you should be. I personally favor black color Rovers but that's just me.
As for OME suspension there are several options as well as any other type of springs or shocks you decide to go with. Check out this link from Expedition Exchange, just to give you an idea: https://www.expeditionexchange.com/ome/indexsprings.htm There is a lot of information here, do a search for what you need. There is nothing that has not been covered. Update us with your mods and changes.

Treasure those pictures, because your truck will probably never look that good again.
As a ME student, you are going to start looking like "No Neck Gambinni" from shaking your head so much, once you get into the engineering of these trucks. The term "what the hell were they thinking" will become a daily mantra. All of that said, you will love the Disco, for it's capability, and a platform providing endless possibilities for mod, upgrade, and just plain accessories. Welcome! You've got a lot of good shoulders to cry on with this group. |
