Can I get after-market ones they go for $56 to $60 or should I get the $129. ones atlantic British? (for Bank a & bank b front)
I needs a major tune up, this Disco has 109,000 miles, needs 02 sensors, Fuel Filter, spark plugs, wires etc. What are the best brands to choose from for a disco of this year?

After reading several posts yesterday I decided on ordering from Atlantic British for my '96... $129 each. ouch.
I also read that it is recommended not to replace them with a wrench or you might strip the nut. Anyone know what tool is best for replacing them? |

dont replace the oxygen sensors unless a code is called for.
you are better off replacing the leaks and other stuff first.

What he said, How do you know it needs O2 sensors? Not trying to insult your inteligence, but if your ECU isnt throwing codes for bad O2 i wouldnt play with them. If they are, then by all means go for it. I dont know if they have brought up the topic here or not, try using the search function and look for something like "alternative o2 sensors" or something similar. I know there are several threads about it on DWeb, may want to check there too.

There actually is a tool just for removing Oxy sensors, but chances ae you re going to have to resort to the old torch and welding a new nut onto the pipe for the new oxy sensor and then just leave the old one in place unplugged. 3 out of 4 of mine came out the 4th...

I have a hair-line crack on the right side passenger manifold (it's noisy) that's what must be causing the 02 sensors to act up, the advance evaporative code and also the multiple piston miss fires.

My LR mechanic, wants to replace the spark plugs and wires he says that can also be why there is a miss fire.

that could be the problem but then again it could not be.
if you are getting misfires you need to check fuel pressure first before selling plugs and wires.

Yea, you can check for fuel pressure, but 9 times out of 10 for misfire codes you will just need plugs and wires. You said that you have a hairline crack on the manifold, I have never seen that be the cause for a o2 sensor to act up. What exactly is the code say? Does your LR mechanic have an Autologic diag system to read the code or is it just a general code reader?

This is the recommended tune-up/ work on the Disco 98 by my mechanic (he says this is normal wear on a car 10 years old). (also has the wrong battery)
1. right side Manifold replaced 2. 02 sensors 3. New Radiator (because the one on the disco is 10 years old he says) (although it is cooling well right know) I might do this last. But he say's the sooner the better. 4. Fuel Filter 5. Oil pan gasket, Valley gasket and valve cover gaskets (they are leaking) 6. Spark plugs & wires 7. Evap 8. Oil & filter change 9. Trany filter and oil change

SafariDave: please forgive me but...who the hell is this mechanic??? If your cooling system is working OK, do not replace the radiator! Likewise the valley gasket - are you sure it is leaking, otherwise don't replace it because it is a fair amount of work. Look for some leaked coolant in the valley at the front. By all means flush the coolant every two years max.
Our '96 has Walker O2 sensors that are still OK (just passed aircare). If you can use Bosch O2 sensors, you should be able to get 'Universal' ones which are much cheaper (about $50 or less) than the ones that have the LR wires/connectors already on them. |

I know... I'm not going to replace the radiator. The first thing I am doing is the manifold to see what codes come up after it's replaced. Maybe it will clear some of the 02 codes . I did not see any coolant leak, but there is an oil leak, I might just leave it like that for the time being and work on the misfire or if it's a fuel issue. The car idles fine when I drove it in city traffic. I did feel some piston misfire as I idle. (Can you feel piston miss fire or can it be something else? Like rod bearings) The idle needle was good it never fluctuated when I stopped at red lights it idles better than my classic. Or maybe I felt blow back from having a hair line crack in the right side manifold which is loud.

wow, he is really shirking you for money. At least at the dealership we only fix what is broken. This guy wants to replace everything cause he sees an opportunity.
with the codes put the manifold in first and clear the codes if the oxygen sensor codes come back replace the oxygen sensors. unless you manifold is leaking coolant then don't bother.
