Do the trucks make any noise/visual indication when it is in low (not locked).. I seem to remember way in the past it beeped when putting into low, but I haven't heard anything in a while.

my dad's 95 does not. speaking of which, i think something's wrong with the truck. or rather, i know something is wrong with it and think it may be my fault. i went mudding the other night without him knowing(bad idea, i know. stupid, selfish, never gonna happen again in that truck unless i've bought it from him. so don't preach, i'm giving myself a hard time for it.) i thought it was just gonna be some trails that are pretty much hardcore dirt roads with puddles, but i was following this assbag in a jeep cherokee, which has aux lights on the brushguard that aren't wired to give you an idea what this kid is like... well he decides he wants it to be a jeep vs LR war, which is gay, i make fun and stuff but its just that, fun...i like to get along. but anyways, he leads me some places i've never been and so pretty much if i ditched him i was lost. he lead me down this really stupid place to be with street tires, its pretty flat, excet on one side is a nice slope to a pond and on the other is one of those constructionish black cloth fences with wooden stakes, woods are on the other side of the fence. its slick mud, he gets stuck so i have to stop so i dont hit him, i get stuck, and did not have a good time. i got pulled out, but i spun tires ALOT in the mud and gunned the engine and all that. cleaned it all up and went home. my dad drove it 60 miles two days later, and it was fine, except for some whining with the power steering which was there before my horrible experience. next morning he calls me to tell me to refill the power steering cuz he forgot to. i go outside, pop the hood and freak out cuz theres mud all over the engine...well not too bad, just a light coating and splatters on the hoses and whatnot... so i go get some wet rags and start whiping it down but realize thats not cutting it. since the engines cold, i decide to hose it. i took care not to spray the battery or any air sensors and stuff like that, but on the way to school i notice the engine sounds funny, and the car vibrates when i give it gas. the best description i can give for the sound is its the same exhaust note, it just sounds like the jetsen's space ship thing. i've played with the transfer (neutral, hi, lo, hi lock, lo lock). it also doesnt like being shifted in as low of revs, but that happened once before when i was learning to drive and it just stopped one day. any help? i know it was a horrible, stupid thing to do, but i did get in to more than i expected to.

Garland,

Pop open your airbox and see if you got it filled with water.. also look at the mass air flow sensor to see if there is any mud/water noticable there. Usually when that happens, a day or two will let it dry out.

As I understand it, when in high rang w/o diff lock engaged, the transfer case will send power to all four wheels. If any one or more wheels loose grip (in air or on ice, etc.), the system sends all power to the wheel(s) w/o grip.

With diff lock engaged, the system sends 50% forward, and 50% rearward, regardless of wheel traction. However, if any one wheel in the front, or rear, looses grip, the entire front or rear torque is sent to that wheel. Sort of stupid.

So, a landrover with diff lock engaged, is the same as any other four wheel drive vehicle with open differentials (like a jeep) in four wheel high/low.

So for true four wheel drive in a disco, you need diff lock engaged, with additional locking differentials, front and rear. Same for a jeep (w/o manual locking front axels), but just put it in 4hi or 4low, with locking diffs.

Hope this helps. Personally, I have an 89 yj with 33 inchers for the messy work, and a '98 disco for the light work/wife's daily driver. In the future, I will add limited slip diffs in the jeep, with higher gears, a v8 and auto trans, winch, sliders, etc., and keep the disco for the country club scene.

I would hope so; however, right now, I cant afford to beat up the disco. I will say this, the articulation on a stock disco is quite impressive.

My wife, father in-law, and I were doing some light wheeling last weekend, and I took it through a shallow ditch which would have made one of the jeep's wheels lose traction, the the disco didnt loose any weight on any tire.

It was sweet, as my wife was driving and took it back across a shallow river (18 inches) with some nice sized rocks (basketball) and did great. The diff lock doesnt engage (need to pull console and regreas, etc), but it didnt slip at all.

i see... i thought you were sayin the disco cant cut it...
anyways i figured out whats wrong with the truck. one of the sparkplug wires seperated from the terminal at the sparkplug. a couple others are about to go... i'm hoping its from 250k on the engine and not my abuse.

my dad just looked at the truck and didn't say anything about the mud. so, i've learned my lesson. never again offroading my dads truck. now all i need to do is get a job and come up with enough money to buy my own disco.

Maybe whatever's supposed to beep isn't working?

Mine has always beeped when going into 4low-locked.

Btw, how do you bypass the CDL solenoid?

Default al's discovery

G'day guys

thought I'd put my two cents worth in...

I just had my 98 disco off the tarmac for a good work out and found that the rear wheels were spinning and not a lot happening up front. Further investigation found that the 5 studs connecting the axle to the hub up front had sheared off.. Must have hit it hard but really can't remember doing this... only really found it cause I was changing the brake pads and having a look around. When the car was lifted off the ground, and in gear, the wheel spun freely... thought I was going nuts.
