If this logic is correct, having the headlights on or off makes no difference.
If on the other hand the torque to turn the alt varies according to how much current is drawn (up to a max of 100 amps), then you can figure out the draw in hp based on the equivalence of 746 watts = 1 hp. A 100 amp alternator at about 14 volts potential would produce 1400 watts. This would use less than 2 hp.
Perhaps someone can chime in here to explain the circuitry function better.

$120/week in fuel!!! Wow! In our weekend D1, we burnt about $500 for all of 2006! In our other 3 vehicles, we burnt about $1500 for all of 2006! How do you people afford such high costs? Sorry, I take the question back...
apology for much late reply.
unfortunately my DI is now the only vehicle at my disposal, for a family of seven and both of us parents workin. the missus take to work then finished in time to get home for me to get to work and all the short trips etc, all up at about 400km a week of town drivings. hoping to get my 1.8L Corona car soon from my cousin who is without a car at the moment. i bought the D1 for a twice a week usage only purpose but shit happens and now ...well..now and then regreted having got a D1! things should better soon, hoping that is...

lolorover: please note I took the question back - it's funny how things can turn out differently than we expect. To be fair, we have only one 'kid' left at home and she really dislikes city driving. Also, we have good public transport within 5 minutes walking distance and are semi-retired so it is easy for us to keep our fuel consumption very low.
Hope you can get the use of that economy vehicle soon.
Cheers from Vancouver
