Okay so my Disco has been running funny for the past 2 weeks. The power would drop and climb and a Pop sound coming from the engine compartment like a back fire or Misfire when I would accelerate. Changed The VSS didn't work had new plugs and wires put in Still throwing codes of misfire /running rich and now Just tonight I to go to KFC for a fried chicken Dinner and look at my driver side mirror and see thick white like smoke coming from the exuast pipe I didn't think much as the engine was cold I go home and park with the Truck still idling and look at the exuast and there is a slight ticking sound from the pipe and the smoke is coming from under the Truck where the Cat coverter is plus CEL light is on and the idling is still rough and the power is still going up and down with the "pop" sound. So do u think it's time for new cats Need help and FAST.
96 Discovery 1 98200 miles PS I'm dissappointed as this was my RTE bumper money now the Truck wants to be a bad girl. ![]()

If it is the catalytic converter thats failed, installing a new one without finding the reason for the failure will only result in another failed cat in a short time. The white smoke that you refer to indicates that perhaps you have a leaking head gasket which somewhat explains your other symptoms, and if the "white smoke' is coming from around the catalytic converter area, check that the catalytic converter doesn't have a crack or hole in it. Also, while your under there, have a look and see if the Cat C is discoloured, this indicates excessive heat caused by unburnt fuel burn in the cat. Also give it a decent belt with you hand (while it's cool of course) and see it there is a rattling sound. if there is, the material inside the Cat C has broken up and the cat needs replacing.

how about giving me the all the codes and then checking several things.
how about Fuel Pressure. is it at 32psi at idle. After turning the vehicle off does it drop. if there is a problem with the system it will drop. the system should theoretically hold all the pressure for at least a half an hour. if your cats were bad you would have 0420, 0430

Need the codes, the cats are not causing your truck to have it problem, they ar just burning up trying to burn off the engines pollutanys be it gas, oil and or coolant.
Get the codes and lets work from there. Mike |

check fuel pressure. it should be 32psi at idle. then turn the vehicle off. it should hold that pressure for at least a half an hour.
and less and you have a fuel issue. if it holds it could be an ignition coil.

it was the ingition coil It was shot. don't kill me but I did take it land rover fremont to fix it and plus I didn't want to chance getting stuck going to redwood city were my car is normally fixed. however they cut me a deal because I'm a long time customer also my moms had several things done there as well we are well know at that dealer we are often called the Disco duo. and they gave me a 50$ gift cetificate. plus an invitation to an Dealer off road event.
Sometimes Land Rover (the dealer) is cool ![]()
