Default Ignition coil upgrades

Does anyone have any ideas on this?

I'm getting a HD alternator and an 8mm magnacore wire set, upgrading to a 2 gage battery wire and may look into some HD batteries (later). I'll stick to stock plugs for now, but wanted to know if there's anything I can do with the ignition coil...

Thanks guys!

MG.
Have you looked on the internet for high performance engine coils? There are a number of companies like Jacobs, Mallory that should have something for you.
Good luck with your project.

Great stuff, Mike - thanks!

The Jacobs info is easier for me to understand than the Mallory stuff. Though this doesn't necessarily mean that the first is better, it certainly influences my possible purchase decision.

Before I go, willy-nilly, changing parts out on the Beast, I want to see if it'll make a difference: is anyone running non OEM or high performance coils? Any reportable results?

Cheers,

I just put an MSD off-road coil in my truck, and seems to have made a world of difference in performance. The coil itself is much more powerful than the OEM one, and it's filled with epoxy instead of oil, so it doesn't come unwound under rough conditions (hence the reason why it's called an off-road coil).

As far as actual performance increases, I don't have access to a dyno, but it sounds like it's running significantly stronger, and its acceleration has improved a good bit.

More information is here: http://www.msdignition.com/coil_blaster_3_8222.htm

definatly would go for the MSD off-road. Compared to the other stuff on the market, I would just say that its superior, though it could be very expensive. Ive been looking at getting one in the next year or so,

Felix, did you go with the MSD ignition control or the ballast resistor on an OEM setup?

Thanks Felix and keptin for the tips.

I just replaced my existing coil, no extra stuff needed. I do plan to install an MSD ignition with my next paycheck, though. The coil itself isn't overly expensive, only $45 from Summit Racing.

The link you posted, is that the PN of the coil you used on your D1? And if not, do you have it?

And slight thread hijack, but still on topic: what do y'all think is a good set of wires for a stock D1, 8mm Magnecores? Or something else?

Yep, that's the exact coil I'm using.

And I'm running stock-sized wires at the moment, but I'll be grabbing some 8.5mm Magnecors along with the MSD kit this month

Cheers,
I'm running MSD6A ignition with Jacobs Ultracoil on my 95, and Crane Hi6 ignition with a Crane PS92 coil on my 91. Both systems are excellent and you can expect a gain of 10-12 extra horsepower.

Graig,
Did you source it locally?...I'm looking at a coil upgrade as well.
Be keen to hear how it goes.

Craig, if that's USD, you got severely ripped off, that coil is only $35.

You guys with all this flexibility... What can a fella do with a 98 Disco?

Do I have an option to change or upgrade my coil pack?

Recon the more modern you get with the Disco the more problems seem to occure, mine is the 1993 so basicly its the old Rover V8 3.5 with an injection unit thrown on. Here in New Zealand this engine was used for stockcars so parts are in plenty supply and very fairly priced too.

Actually, yes. According to MSD's website, the following systems will work with the '98 Disco ignition:

Option 1: http://www.msdignition.com/ignition_28_7010.htm
Option 2: http://www.msdignition.com/ignition_24_6211_6215.htm
Option 3: http://www.msdignition.com/ignition_25_62111_62151.htm

All of these should be available from www.summitracing.com. Good luck!

Well guys it came today (New Blaster 2 coil) and yep its made some difference, seems cleaner off the mark and also seems to change smoother for some reason!!! Will know better in the morning as im driving over to Auckland with 3 ton of steel in the trailer, that will sort the men from the boy's Just orded one of these vortex units for the air system off E-Bay, they recon 16% more HP and 31% better fuel mmmmmmmmmmmm lets see if thats true aye as my right foot tends to favor the "hard on the floor" position rather than the mid way point.... Just as well I have a Laser/radar scrambler fitted I tend to use it most trips

Don't confuse any power/fuel increases to the Vortex gizmo as it will do jack sh*t. You would have spent your money more wisely buying the equivalent in BEER. Any hp increases and fuel saving will be a result of your new coil.
