howdy gentlemen,
I've got a 97 DI 120k, my key broke about 6 months back and I had to have a new one recut. Initially I had to wiggle it for a day to get it to turn and it just progressivly got better, to the point were wigggling was a non-issue. Today I get in there and its acting like it was the day I had the key recut, I wiggled the key for ten minutes, said screw it and got a ride to work. Now I don't know if this might correspond but I've learned never to write out any variable in LR diagnosis, but my battery in my remote is dead and I haven't had a chance to grab another one. So I was just using the key to open/lock doors. Could that have anything to do with this? And how often do you guys change remote batteries? I seem to burn through a ton of them. Thanks. Tom |

On my D2, I cahnge my remote battery every 2 years.
As for the key problem, you should never allow the key to get broken in by the tumblers cause you are trashing them in the process. Should have taken a wire wheel and knocked down all the new keys rough spots before using. At this point your tumblers are probably pack with metal shavings and or warn out. Mike |

Most likely your key wasn't cut exactly right and you might have chewed up your ignition tumblers by wiggling the key. Or as Mike said, they're probably full of metal shavings from the wiggling.

I also have a 97 and had key issues about a year ago. I wanted to have a spare and LR made one to specs, but it wouldn't work. I eventually replaced the ignition (it isn't too difficult to do) and though it is costly, lots of problems went away. It just means a key for the door and a different key for the ignition. Mostly I've learned that though it costs more (up front) to go ahead replace things with new parts, it costs less (and certainly comes with fewer annoying headaches) in the long run.

TLamb - we have a 96 D1 and both remotes still work on their original batteries. Broke an ignition key once and got a new one from the dealer...also no problems.
