Default Intermittent starting problem - revisited...

Ok guys, I've replaced the fuel filter, with negres. I just replaced the multi-unit fuel pump relay. Still no joy... It seems like it just doesn't get fuel for a few starting attempts then all of a sudden it starts right up like nothing happened. I'd like to exhaust all "simple" possibilities before I replace the fuel pump. Anyone have any other thoughts on this?

This I know:
The fuel pressure is not bleeding off because the longer the vehicle sits the better chances of it starting right up. (ie; I take it to work and it starts everytime I get in to go home after sitting for 8hrs) If I stop to get gas on the way to work, then it won't start on first attempt when I try to leave the gas station. It takes about 3 tries to get it started.

If I feather the gas pedal I can start it on the first attempt but when I let my foot off the pedal it just dies. I can drive it this way but I have to keep the RPMs up to keep it from stalling.

It has to be some electrical component that fails intermittanly when it gets hot. Any help from a certified Rover mech would be greatly appreciated.

have you checked the main and/or fuel pump relays? I remember owning a honda that had the same symptoms your describing and it ended up being a relay.

No certification here (not even any formal training in wrench-turning), so take it fwiw: the feathering that you have to do to the gas pedal sounds like a similar issue I had with the stepper motor (idle air control valve - iacv) on the side of the plenum chamber. When it goes, you'll have a bunch of stalling issues - I've become really good at keeping the engine running with my toes and braking with my heel, simultaneously.

Clean your iacv and make sure it has a good seal to the plenum. If you have access to another Disco, swap the actuators to see which vehicle keeps the problem. Looking at your sig, I notice you have a Chevy Astro - I'm pretty sure that the iacv on the Astro is interchangeable with that of the Disco (at least for a '95 Disco it is, but I'm not sure about what model year Astro - see http://www.rangerovers.net/discoparts/).

Good luck!

Are you running rich, too? That's another symptom.

my name is mark and i have a 99 that randomly stalls and starts but no fire when hot . the intermittent part i have come to believe is a sensor ie: coolant sending unit, fuel temp sensor , or crank sensor my understanding is when one of these gets old and hot they cause no start symptoms

I'd suspect the Coolant Temperature Sensor.

I'm no certified Rover Tech, but had same issue. Changed potentiometer-butterfly and problem was solved.
