Thought I'd get this started and see if I can get it sorted out. There seems to be no rhyme or reason to it, but every once in a while the rover won't start. It seems to be happening more often. Sometimes I just need to let it crank, and crank then it will fire. Sometimes it starts fine (most of the time). Sometimes it takes several attempts. Twice now I've had to give it a shot of starting fluid.
Where do I start to start ruling stuff out?
Thanks

You'll be replacing a starter if you don't iron it out soon.......
If it starts after a shot of starting fluid then I'd be looking at the fuel pressure side of the house, from the pump all the way to the injectors. Be thorough.
Quick tip, if the plugs are wet you have fuel after a no go start. Then it's the dizzy side of the house.
You bought a beater for sure, it's beating you.
We seem to be missing somebody from the U.P. otherwise we've got the state covered.
It did it again today, starting fluid didn't help so I started playing with the inertia switch. I unhooked it and plugged it back in and it started right up.

I have no idea how you diagnosis a bad inertia switch.
Maybe Doug does.

The inertia switch is only a two wire, it sits between the fuel pump relay and the pump. It's either going to have continuity or not. Maybe it has corrosion, not always making. It's either the switch or fuel pump relay and disconnecting/reconnecting the inertia while the system's hot might have done the trick for now. I would replace the relay and the inertia with bone yard parts to test out. You can meter it but you already know one of the two is not performing so why not toss a part at it.
I have not. It seems a little better, but nothing has changed so I'm waiting for it leave me stranded.
I'm wondering if it might be a relay going bad. It hasn't done it in a while so I can't tell but the last time I started to notice it seemed to be different sort of "click" under the dash on the pas. side when it wouldn't start than it normally does. I'll update later....I'm finally driving it so I'll be able to know more soon.
