Arrow I've got an itch I'm afraid to cure...

If you read my Adventure in the Magic City thread, you'll know that I have a very leaky roof. My headliner is doin bad at this point as It has soaked up a bunch of water. I don't know if I want to replace the headliner for some waterproof material, leave it in bare metal...or..the icing on the cake......CHOP the whole friggin top off like several others have done. I guess the only thing keeping me from completely talking myself into it would be saftey and the Humidity & Heat. What do you guys think?

I definately need to take it off...I just can't decide what to do. At first I was thinking of replacing the cloth liner with Vinyl or something that's easily cleaned. But now I've really been hit by the Chop Bug.

Question Here is a couple of ideas....

Get rid of the liner, prep the inside and here is my two ideas:

get carbon fiber and put it in the original headliners place.

get rhino liner and make a real rugged although not hair-friendly liner .

Another thing I saw the other day was a outfit that did a ragtop conversion on a H1 Hummer ala Trucks!
Some outfit has a kit that has a soft top that goes into folds toward the front of the vehicle when you open it. The kit goes for 1200 or 1300 dollars.

You do have to kiss your OEM roofrack goodbye but if you get the rack that sits on the rain gutter, you would have still plenty of cargo space up top.

Default roof leak

I didn't read your thread with details about the leak. Is it around the glass or do you have a rust problem? I guess I'd just fix it back to original. I'd have issues with the noise and wind, but I'm generally not off road...

If you chop it, then is there a security issue when you have something in your truck you don't want removed, like tools or

Well........... I'd fix it to the original UNLESS you are going to go crazy into the 4-wheeling life!!!

John C. ripped out his headliner and painted it I believe with regular house paint (white).. looks great.

I'd also consider POR-15 if you want to do it... keep it nicely sealed for life..

If you want to go the truck bed liner route, i just picked up a herculiner kit from pepboys for like $70 bucks..

It is only a security problem if you don't do something about it. Most modern alarm systems have microwave area sensors designed for open top vehicles. Install such a system properly and it will take care of the problem.

Just wondering:

I just wonder if POR-15 has a odor to it until it is fully cured. It is supposed to be fast curing but I would not know if I wanted to drive my LR with it smelling like a chemical spill.

I also thought about the security issue. WIth the right alarm, a few D1 hood switches, I'm almost sure I can fix that.

I do sorta like the bare metal look from the inside with a headliner-less top.

Aaron, there are a ton of Jeep posers down here that dont take their Wranglers ANYWHERE near the end of the road. Amazingly, the Jeep is not at the top of thief's most commonly stolen vehicle list. Hmm...a chopped disco would attract some attention though.

To be honest, I just dont want to have to worry about the rust and windows. I guess I'm now on a mission to find a shop that will give me a quote on a jop like this!

While I do the job, I will have to take care of the problem temporarily so I'm going to seal everything off properly with Silicone, and look at the different options for the inside of the truck.

Let me guess, they don't want to be alligator bait. You know them gators don't discriminate between Rovers and Jeeps either.

Where I wheel gators aren't the main concern, its the Mosquitos and crap in and arund the mud you have to worry about. You get cut while walking through the mud and you've become a Bacteria feeding frenzy!

Default removable top

I suppose it would be expensive to do both. Cut the top off and weld plate in spots onto the bottom of the top; weld onto the top of the vehicle..thin plate. Put a rubber gasket(1/4 inch maybe) between it. Then build a roll cage and some canvas for the other top.

I've never done anything like this, so I expect it would be a lot harder than it sounds.

Arrow Here is one idea of how it would look....

this was in an issue from WIred magazine. Insert Land Rover where you see Hummer.

Please excuse the burriness. This is from my Treo 650. It is good in some things, but not photographing glossy magazines.

Nice, though, aint it?
