Default Knocking

Ok, a new problem has come up. Their is a knocking sound near my front right tire, every time I go over a bump. I have checked everything underneath the hood every thing is tight. Could it be a CV joint?

Any suggestions would be very helpful.

I had a similar problem about 4 months after I bought my truck. Turns out the rubber on the mounting part of the shock had worn out. I called around to replace it...Holy Moley...that's when I became a DIY kind of guy! Bought two OME's for the price on labor quoted to replace one shock, part not included. Took me about 10 minutes each side.

Another thing to check...is your spring coming unseated?

Also, are the bolts tight on the shock tower?

Too bad you didn't have long distance travel shocks. I have a pair of shock towers on my garage to fit them - sort of like the shock towers on a D2 - the loop end instead of the bolt type end like a D1.

I currently have the same problem, but I was told that it could be the bushes on the radius arms . I have new OME shocks, so in this case I don’t think it is the shocks making the sound. It is driving me insane .

It must be in the air or something as the drivers side upper shock bush is completely gone and knocking on my Disco also... very annoying. Anyway Badger it is quite an easy fix(and no I have not fixed it yet ) as RoverX stated and hey you already have half the parts. Bonus!

This was the first repair I did on my '96 and I was pleasantly surprised how easy it was. Of course I had access to an impact wrench, which made it easy to get the nut off the top of the shocks (they spin otherwise). One potential problem to look out for is the brittle shock retaining ring bolts. I've heard putting some penetrating oil on them the night before helps, but I didn't do it and 2 of the bolts snapped. So having a couple extra rings might be a good idea just in case you need them.

Good luck,
Josh

My 97 had a similar problem when I first got it, when I would come to a stop I'd hear a metallic thud from under the hood which turned out to be worn shock bushings causing the shaft on the shock to slap against the hole in the shock tower. Talk about some neglected suspension

I sent the bilsteins back, they were not HD. They weren’t even for a Disco, they were for a Montero. made the mistake of ordering them off eBay. I gave the seller a bad review and a nasty but professional email.
I ordered 4 Pro-Comp 2" long distance travel shocks. Will they work with those mounts? If they will, I will buy them from you.

Thanks for helping me guys!!

Are the top of the shocks eyelets like D2's or studs like D1 stock shocks?

The round part where the bolt goes through is called an eyelet and it looks like they have them on both ends. If they towers work, they are your for free, you just bring the vodka & beer when we do a trail run or a get together! I prefer Kettle One from my motherland....
