Default Land Rover Basics Needed (just bougt one on Craig's List)

Here's the deal, Wife and I are going to SF, I told her to buy one-way tickets, we'd buy a vehicle and drive it home (WI), do some off-roading in Moab/Silverton... etc on the way. I'm a good mechanic, owned and worked on lots of 4x4's, but never a Rover. I'm taking tools with me.

Anyway, can anybody plz school me on Land Rover Dicsovery 1's? I need a quick tutorial. For instance, I think I read somewhere the charging system was 24v. What weaknesses are inherent in the 1998 year? What things should I look over closely before I set off from San Fran across the mtns and Nevada (lonliest road)? ...besides check/change oil/joints and all that.

I went by the LR dealership and was really impressed with the LR3 that I looked at. It was really beefy, much moreso than even Toyota Land Cruisers, in my mind.

Thanks in advance.

Well.. Look for leaks.... Head gaskets, Power steering and oil cooler lines.

Do check for jack/tools for flat tire.. alot of D1's I see used are missing them.. if so it takes a 27mm for the lugs!

Also check the rotoflex-(where the rear u-joint should be is a rubber donut looking item, just look it over for wear)

check all fluids(sure you already do)

Others will be on soon to help out more!

HI! Well for starters it is not a 24V charging system. Funrover covered alot of it! An LR3 is far more luxurious than a D1, it is rugged yet comfortable! The best advice I could give you is READ READ READ! Just pick topics and start reading on this forum. I had a D1 for over 4 years, then decided to sell it, to get out of Rovers! Alas....I had the disease and couldn't shake it, and 2 months later I bought a 93 Range Rover classic! Well long story short, I missed the D1 and now I have bought(stole ) a project D1! You will like it, but she will always keep you attention! You will find out what I mean!! Good luck!!!

All of the above plus:

Check for rust underneath carpets, wheelwells, chassis.

No roto on a 98

Make sure all the switches and functions work as should be

That is all for now. Hope you find yourself a nice truck out there. Enjoy it they are fun, and haven't found them to be quite as bad as they are made out to be(I know Lucas will make me pay for that).

Oh and where in WI are you from?
