A 1-1/16" socket will do it. If you have the caps over the lugs and they've expanded and cracked because of winter get yourself a 1-1/8" socket too, you'll be glad you did

I found this post useful.

So I took my 99DII to get the tires balanced and rotated and found that I had one lug completely rounded off. They basically said they couldn't do anything for me and refunded my money.

It actually wasn't that bad of a fix. I just took a pair of vice grips and locked on the lug, then hit the end of the wrench with a hammer. It took 3-4 tries but the cap eventually came off.

Hopefully this helps someone.

You're better off getting a 1-1/8" socket. If you remove the caps you'll end up with mangled lug nuts all rusted up underneath.

Just to be clear, this is only if the chrome caps are distorted. If the caps are in good shape, 27mm or 1 1/16"
If I'm at a tire shop, I have them use my socket.

Commenting on the above, I have a '97 Disco. I could hardly get my socket on the lugs and then couldn't get it off again. The stainless covers were so distorted from tire store abuse. I grabbed my lug with a pair of vise grips and slid a bolt through the hole in the lug. A couple of good wacks with a hammer sent the cover flying. All of the lugs were in great shape underneath as they are cadmium plated. They have a very distintive look now that sets my otherwise common alloys apart. Other guys have asked me where I found the custom lugs. Would do it again in a heart-beat.
