The only way to check fluid level is through the fill plug. Fluid should be level with the top of opening. Normally you can not tell with your finger. I usually fill untill it runs out the hole. My "98 has auto, so it has dipstick. If you are changing fluid, BE SURE to remove fill plug FIRST !!! You don't want to empty trans and not be able to refil...I use a big 1/2in breaker bar to get drain plug out !!! Hope this helps...

Up on the side you'll find a plug. I think it's about 22mm or something and has a very thin head so you'll probably need a socket rather than a spanner. the drain is at the bottom. I seem to remember this is a messy job as the crossmember gets in the way of the draining oil.

Probably worth checking the level of the gearbox and the transfer case before you dump it. Sometines one leaks into the other if the seals are on the way out.

Cheers
Ben

Default manual gearbox oil change

In Australia the 300 series has an R380 gearbox the fill plug is half way up the gearbox on the right hand side, this is a torx T55 head ,you remove it, like pzwerner says no point in emptying untill you know you can get out the fill plug. Then remove drain plug I think that is 22mm at the bottom same side as the fill pug. Fill the gearbox untill the oil starts to flow out of the fill hole then re-fit the fill plug. The R380 gearbox has an inbuilt oil p/p and forced circulation, over here it is recommended to run auto trans fluid I actually run synthetic Auto trans fluid as it can take a lot more stress than mineral based oil. Regards from Australia
