It comes down to the four basics.


symptom, system, component cause.

Ford guys dont know lr systems and vice versa.

Since its obvious you don t respect the knowledge needed to do the repair and diagnostic regardless of lr or ford or chevy its guys like you I dont help.

SIGH, was that comment really necessary?

If you are a professional, your comments are not representative of one.

If you want respect, you gotta give it. If you don't want to, please don't do it here.

One of the functions of forums such as these is for people to vent their spleens, be educated by those who made auto repair their career, and see how the other side of the street lives.

Unfortunately, those voices we need to hear are rarely on these forums and there is a good reason why. One reason is that they have to pay the bills and spending valuable time on the internet does not pay for the tools, materials, and the rent for a small shop. Second, it is because they have been the focus of direct and indirect abuse that does not have a place here.

If someone needs to vent, fine. If you don't want to assist someone, that is your choice. That then becomes an opportunity for someone else , someone who will make his or her coin, because of your reckless comment. One more deal you the professional will lose out because of your outburst. An outburst that will remain on this site permanently and reflect whenever anyone goes searching for an answer.

Maybe someone here needs to review their netique procedures. Here is one to remember: if you don't have anything good to say, don't say it. Better yet, write your post and delay posting it for 24 hours. Let your emotions subside. If you feel the same, post it. Otherwise, let time and wisdom work on your side and you won't look foolish and make other professionals look more stupid than they have to, already.

You made a decision. You are the owner of a Land Rover.
Was that the hardest decision you made? No. The hardest
decision is who can you trust to do the servicing and repair
with your pride and joy.

"I worked on Land Rovers before. My brother-in-law has one."

Would you trust someone in a shop that said that?

There are several types of mechanics out there. The one you
would want is one that has the expertise and wisdom to
understand and troubleshoot your LandRover. There should be a
seperate certification just for the codes and fuse locations
for the Range Rover alone.

I keep seeing two types or flavors, those who have little
or no expierence with modern embedded automotive computer
systems and those who just gave up on the troubleshooting
process , swap parts until it is "fixed" and just tell you,
"oh, you need a new engine".

Is there a solution? Yes. Education is paramount when you are
the owner of an "esoteric" vehicle.

Are there other things you can do?

Sure. Become an activist for your Land Rover.

Demand that all vehicles after a certain date be field
repairable. No propeitary computer systems needed. Don't
think it won't happen? The Library of Congress just made
some exemptions and they involve old software and unlocking

If Ford/LandRover hears from you, that opens avenues of
communication. Ford/LR is in dire straits. They need to sell cars.
If you talk to them, they will say "what do I have to do to
sell you a car?"

Tell him. Maybe your opinion will make them sell a cheap version
of the Defender and have them shelf the LR2.

It can happen.

Remember that 70% of LandRover are still on the road. Don't you
want another one, a newer one that you can fix?

Rovin4life: were your comments directed at me?

Adam in NYC USA: I agree about asking manufacturers to offer a model that has as little electronics as possible (probably only an ECU). I suspect however that they are told by their marketing people that sales would be too low. I remember buying our bare bones Disco in 1996 - why did we have to have electric windows, an alarm and automatic dimming rear view mirror, ABS? The dealer insisted our 5 spd was the most stripped down (difficult to sell) model available from LR and all 97s would be 'loaded up' automatics. We got it a great price.

So it may be that the only way to get a really simple field-fixable Rover is to build one yourself. Take a look at the November issue of 4Wheel Drive magazine..."Rising Sun Rover". This guy started with a Series I and seems to have made an excellent rig. When our D1 4.0 engine gives up, there may be an opportunity to design our truck down for simplicity. But then again, it might be possible to go true plug-in hybrid.....
