I am prepping my 98 disco 1 for a 5k plus mile road trip to commence tomorrow! Last minute cooling issues required some additional work. In the process, I broke a blade off of the cooling fan.
It now has a vibration, most notable at low rpms. When looking from above, the pulley seems to have a bit of a wobble too. I called around, and no one has it. The dealer cant get it until monday. Do you guys think it will cause premature water pump bearing failure if I go with what I've got? One option is to find a dealer on my route with one in stock, and swap once I get there. The fan is the same on a D90, and a RRC 1995, according to british atlantic. Thanks for your thoughts. Kieran |

I think you'd be OK, but don't hold me to it. I think your best option is to call around and find a dealership on the way that has one.
And where the heck are you going that is 5k miles away? lol |

Under no circumstances do you want to drive that truck with one blade missing from your fan. The fan will fly apart taking at least the hood ,a water pump and possibily the radiator along with it. I have seen too many of theses happen, in the past, and as a service writer, I loved it.
Trust me, I am not guessing on this problem, you will spend lots of $$$$$ if you don't replace the fan ASAP. Mike |

I agree you need it fixing ASAP.
A stop gap is to balance the fan for the missing blade. Maybe drill a hole or two and screw in a self tapping screw or so. If you can balance it, it should wobble anylonger and be safe(ish). Of course with a balde missing it won't shift as much air, so it won't actually work as well, which is why it's important to replace it. Of course to balance it up you could snap the opposit blade off as well ![]()

I know the old theory of chewing gum and bailing wires works in a pinch, but not with this fan, not when you consider the cost of the neaqrly for sure damage. If a blade broke off, there is now a weak spot, possibily a very fine crack that centrificul force will tear apart. Drilling holes will slso weakend more of the fan hub.
Don't risk it. Mike |

on a tip from a dwebber, I got a fan by imperial which worked for his RRC. No love. too wide.
The dimensions needed for a D1 are: 17 inch diam. 3 1/4 inch bolt holes (4) Counter clockwise rotation and 1 5/16 depth from mounting surface of fan-to-fan clutch, to blade ends. I understand a Flex Lite brand replacement with p.n. 1517 should work. I couldn't find one locally to test fit so I gave in and ordered next day air from AB. At least I know it will fit. So I'll loose a half day but if nothing fails (I did hoses, tstat, water pump and temp sensor yesterday), all will be good. Thanks for your thoughts, Kieran |
