Default My Rover

Hey everyone. Ive been on the site for a while but i mostly just read whats going on and dont chime in myself too much. Its actually been a good while since ive posted anything. So im gunna use this thread to introduce myself and my rover and plan on putting all my future updates and questions in this thread. In the past ive been bad about not following up with how things turn out so ill try to keep you updated this time around.

I have a 1998 Discovery Series I LE. Odo reads 122k but its gotten a new engine so that doenst mean too much.

The first work i really did on my rover was to replace the whole engine. Shops pricing was way more than doing it myself so i ended up buying all the parts and building it in my garage. Heres some pictures of how it looked back then, and the engine work.

The engine overheated due to rapid coolant loss while i was headed down I75. The block, crank, rods, pistons, ect. all were shot and had to be replaced.

It ran very well for a while, but out on the trails one day it died on me. Wouldnt start back up, and my buddy had to pull me off the trail and back home. Turned out the oil pump had shattered into many pieces and had physically locked up the engine.

In my repeated attempts to crank it back up before i knew the problem, i killed the starter by slamming it against an locked up flywheel too many times. I also killed the alternator in the process. Yay for new parts! At least i have a lifetime warranty on these two parts now so if i ever have to replace them again, no matter the reason, it is free.

Now that that whole issue is worked out, its once again chugging along. Happy as could be.

Hey JC! I ended up sticking to the tried and true stock part, so i guess i cant give testimony to the gains with the crower cam. Thanks!! Ive got more to add to this thread i just figured id break it up a little so its not all one huge post, so stay tunned!

Next thing I did was get a new battery. I seriously considered an optima but ended up getting a duralast. (800 cca, 1000 ca, 105 reserve)

Next i trimmed the front bumper to gain some additional clearance. Youve already seen the before picture, heres what it looked like after.

Fantastic looking Rover and WOW on that engine job

How massive an undertaking is it to rebuild an engine like you did, new parts and all? I'm planning something similar in the fall if I can find suitable storage/work space.

First off, thanks ben. It was a pretty massive job id say. I cant give you a good time estimate on the tear down phase because i was working on it weekends in short time periods. But i can tell you taking the time to take lots of pictures and label bags with bolts and such in them really paid off. Then i spent some good time cleaning the parts i would be transfering over from the old engine. Once i had all the parts i needed i think (if i remember correctly) it took two days work to build the engine and another two to put it in and attach all the extras and wiring and such. But before all that fun i had to get all the parts including: new block, crank, rods, pistons, timing chain and gears, cam, lifters, rings, bearings, and head bolts. I think thats most of it. I also sent the heads off to a shop to get them worked over. I would suggest also replacing the oil pump. In the marietta/atlanta area the cheapest i could find for someone to simply drop a used engine in that had been pulled out of another rover (no work done to it) was about 5k. Land rover Dealership wanted 14k to put a new one in. I built this one for under 2.5k i believe.

great pics and very interesting about the rebuild. Did you run a bigger alternator? I have been thinking about swapping mine out for higher output for my piias and amp. I had a duralast gold like yours but the 900 cca, let me down in the -20 of the western slope oil field big time. Took it back to autozone got a full credit and went with a red top optima. No more issues. Worth paying 200 for a battery.
