Default New to the board questions?

Ya im picking up my 97 land rover se7 tommorow and i have no clue about how these vehicles stand up in terms of maintenece, what should i look for as to changing out right away, its got 79k on the motor and everything runs great and the brakes are amazing, it fires right up etc.....but it has a leak in the rear sunroof how can i fix this and the rear top roof window is fogged? Also what type of Plugs should i buy for it and i am buying new belts for it and getting all new fluids put in, i have read up on them and know they have issues and so on like most vehicles and i know its expensive to fix, my spec-v was a pain to get parts cause they had to be ordered over seas. I do alot of work on my vehicles by myslef, so having someone do my work for me is a no no unless its a big job, plus we have a dealer where im from that speaclizes in land rover so i will go to them. Can you guys just give me a heads up on what to keep an eye on and what are some things that can go bad. I tried reading up as much as a i could, i just think their amazing vehicles and look great, plus my insurance dropped 70 dollars a month with this thing, haha.

Thanks
Jake

You'll find these vehicles very user friendly, in my opinion. The leaks in sunroofs, doors, windows, etc. is normal for high mileage Land Rovers. Fixing this hasen't been much of talk, but I say swapping the old weather stripping for something thicker.

Parts can be expensive but can be found at websites and such. Generally these Land Rovers are not frequent maintenence vehicles unless you beat the hell out of it. Taking it off-road driving is not considered "beating the hell out of it" in my book at least. That's what it's meant for. Plus there are a ton of accessories and parts for our Land Rovers you can add to yours.

Oh and Welcome to LRO!

Rage is right for the most part. But that would depend on your definition of high maintenance. It is not a Honda Civic... or Passport (I guess that might be a better analogy, okay maybe not). Land Rovers require a little more TLC when it comes to basic maintenance.

Make sure you do what you just said you were going to do, change out those simple routine items and make sure you keep up with them. Rovers will last but you need to participate in the effort.

Anytime I take on a new project I like to make sure I change out the fluids and start my service time table on my own account. I really do not care what the seller says he did, I want it done by me.

If you dont have a OBDII reader... go ahead and pick yourself up one (sooner or later). Invest in a good Shop Manual. You will appreciate it!

Plugs.... NGK will be fine. I tried the Bosch Plat 4's then switched back to NGK. The extra cost was not worth what ever benefit I did not see with those Plat 4's.

Welcome.

I second the Platinum 4's not being all they can be. NGK's are very good. One of my relative's cars had NGK's installed on their truck and I believe they got 130K miles out of them, before a misfire occured.

I yet have to get a manual for my Rover. : But can get.

Welcome to Roverland. You will have fun. I love the fact that they are so smooth off road. My wife loves to tag along on trails because we don't get the crap beaten out of us. I just wish I had a 10' garage door so I can work on it indoors.

Stay on top of it (maintenance). Check fluid levels regularly, like taking a whiz in the morning. Yours leaks too? Sometimes I have puddles on the floor mats after a hard rain. Wipe it up. Check all you hoses and wires from time to time. Mine seems a little on the warm side and has dried out some things. I've replaced those that needed to be and watch the rest. I love the older ones, older than 2000, they're so easy to work on. There's almost nothing I can't reach. Can't say that for my mazda #@%*($)!!!

I've had trouble with both sunroofs regarding leaks after heavy rain. I managed to stop the front one by using silicone bead around the rubber seal but it didn't work on my rear one and I'm going to seal it for good ( I've mould growing in the roof lining!). I've posted this problem before and most people said to check the drain holes on the s.roof are clear but I've found that the rain leaks tru the seals anyway.
