new to discos

I recently bought a 97 Disco at auction, however it came with no owner's manual or tool kit. I wanted to replace the brake pads and foudd that I need a special tool to get the lug covers off. Any hellp help would be appreciated!

Special tool for the lug covers??? The covers that are on the lugs are suppose to stay on there. Sometimes they get rounded if your not careful and then it can be a PITA to get the lug off, but they are part of the lug.

There is a socket/special tool to remove the hub, is that what your talking about?

I have a repair manual that covers your disco if you want it I'll sell it for $60 otherwise you can order the book or rave cd at various places on-line

From what another post said: the wheels have tin covers on the lugs that I need help with and there is a special/extractor type tool that has to be used. Or he suggested to get a 1-1/16" socket with a socket wrench and work at the covers. Do you have any other ideas to take these things off?

Those tin covers stay on the lugs. You use a socket to remove the lug (cover and all in one piece). If you take the tin off you can't put them back on.

Are your covers rounded? If so you can use a punch to poke a hole in the tin and then peel off the cover. That's what I did on a few of mine that got rounded. Then you can order replacement lugs, but they are not cheap. Did you have a tire shop work on your rover? If so and they rounded them I would take it back and make them pay for new lugs. I am sure you can get the factory jack/tire iron from a LR dealer or you can try Atlantic British or some of the other rover parts places. Whatever you do in the future I would advise you to make sure that when somebody is taking your tires off, make sure they don't use air tools on them, just to be safe as the tin covers do round fairly easy.

Take a pic of the lugs so we know exactly what you're talking about.

Some trucks did come with a locking key-style lug nut on each of the tires... there should be a tool with the tire iron to remove this.. other than that I think its just a 27mm or 1 1/16" six-point socket to remove the lugs..
