constantlygoing through the mountains and everything to school, i need new gears...badly.
i'm thinking of 4.11's or maybe 4.56's (if possible) i have 32 inch tires, but i wanna go to 35's at some point. what is the best way to go, cheapest, but still good??

4.11's sound good, I'm by no means an expert on this subject. But if you do upgrade to a steeper gear ration and larger tires, new axles/driveshafts might also be in order to handle the added stress and torque. Gears only multiply horsepower. It's up to the drivetrain to handle that multiplication factor. If that makes any sense. Damn buorbon and black cherry cola all day. I hatre you liver, and I know you hate me, I can tell because you hurt. Sclerosis - here I come...

4.11's are a 17% change in gearing and return your gearing to around standard with around 34 inch tyres. So with 35 inch tyres the gearing would be better than what you have now. However, changing the diff ratio will break standard axles. I run 34.5 inch tyres with 4.11 diff ratios. Make sure they are 4.11's and not 4.1's. 4.11's have a 9 tooth pinion gear. 4.54's in a rover diff centre are not that stong as the retain the 10 tooth pinion gear.

Get in touch with Bill at http://www.greatbasinrovers.com/
He probably is the best scourse of information and gears for Rovers you will be able to find. I bought my 4:10's from him along with my lockers and axles. Good luck, Mike |

GBR 4.1 GEARS One of the frustrations with owning a Land Rover has been the lack of choice in the final drive ratios. A solution is now available. We now offer an alternative gear ratio to solve this problem - 4.10 (10 X 41), which splits the two factory ratios almost exactly in half. It lowers the overall gearing of later model Rovers by 12.5% but actually feels greater than that because at the same speed you are operating at a higher RPM and are further up the power curve. This is an ideal ratio for later model Rovers, which are geared a bit on the tall side (3.54) to start with, particularly if you install oversize tires or live at a higher altitude. You will notice the benefits immediately, 5th gear becomes much more usable, towing is easier and you wonıt be downshifting nearly as often. In particular, vehicles with automatic transmissions benefit because you gain back some of the power you lose with an automatic trannsmission. You will have more power and acceleration under normal driving conditions and you will have more power and control in off road conditions. To quote one of our customers ³The 4.10 gears transformed the vehicle². These gears are manufactured as a direct replacement for the later factory 3.54 ratio with 24 spline pinion gears. You do not need a spacer ring and only need to replace the pinion flange on earlier vehicles with 4 spline pinion gears - mid 1993 Range Rovers and earlier. The 24 spline pinion flange is actually an upgrade for these vehicles as the greater number of splines reduces backlash between these parts and hence reduces shock loads in the drivetrain. All of these gear sets come supplied with 10 new grade 8 ring gear bolts and a new grade 8 pinion nut. We can also supply all hardware to complete the installation - preload and pinion heighth shims, seals, bearings and gaskets. We manufacture these gears with a higher specification steel, shot peen them for stress relief, and radius the teeth to create the highest quality, strongest, quietest 4.1 gear set on the market. These additional processes are not even found on genuine O.E.M. quality gear sets, only the finest, specialty race applications. Mike |

Going from 3.54 to 4.11 is a 16.1% change in gearing. I would not recommend for anyone to go to a 4.1 (10x41) ratio. They are too weak and were designed for cars, not 4WDs. Ashcroft in the UK have 4.11 (9X37) which are a lot stronger and more suit for off road.

Call Keith @ Rover Tracks (303) 506-9429. He has a conversion kit (includes HD axle shafts and cv's) for Toy axles. Runs about $2k for the front and about $700 for the rear....then you have to buy Toy lockers and gears.
