Recently purchased a 97 Disco w/31k. Traded my 97 Tj Wrangler and love this thing. have a couple of Q's? When braking hard on ice the ABS makes a wierd clunking noise at the brake pedal. Is this normal? A little tone alarm sounds as well. Just doesn't seem right.
Also what kind of axles are on the disco. used to the D35 and D44 on my jeep. I do wheel so am possibly looking at upgrades. Lost in this world of discovery. (ok - stupid joke). Thanks in advance for any help Robert Also any advice on lifts (brands) and how much is too much on a Disco to be safe - it is my family car (have a 10 month old lil girl) |

Welcome!
Great find on the 97 D1.......with 31K miles! You won't regret that purchase, especially after you start wheelin it.As for lifts check out www.Rovertym.com, for parts try www.AtlanticBritish.com www.roversnorth.com, just a few. The axles unforunately are a bit weaker than the ones you had on your jeep, but I have never run into any problems with breakage, sometimes driving style has a bit to do with snapping axles. Great Basin Rovers has drivetrane upgrades, like locking diffs, heavy duty axles and such. Depends how crazy you get when you wheel, but I think your Rover will suprise you with its ability in stock form. The noise your hearing is normal. What do the pads and fluid in you braking system look like? I would check them out and depending on the service history? Congrats on your purchase! ![]() Last edited by Badger1 : 02-18-2006 at 03:59 AM. |

One more J--P convert, this is great, especialy with the vehicle you found. The response you got from you ABS brakes is normal. Yes, at some point you will want to upgrade your rear axles, especially if you drop in a locker. Our diff. housing are not like Dana's, Rover gives us one size and the up grade are diffs or axles only. As for a lift on a D1, 2 to 3 inches is common, any more then that and you will also have to replace the front and rear drive lines to adjust for drive line angle. Here is another web site for you, take you time, tease yourself in their huge toy store, think about it and then get back to us. http://www.expeditionexchange.com/ Have fun and welcome to the group. A Dana 35 is nothing compared to a Disco axle- the axles on Discos are good stuff and breakage is more common with the guys doing rocks out West. It's rare to snap one otherwise.
Sounds as if your ABS is sensitive, which is normal. For lifts, there's the ones listed- there's also www.4x4ag.com and me (www.dap-inc.com). I do kits with extended or stock length shocks where we match the spring rates and length specifically so they all work together. Depending on the wheelin intensity and future mods, there's a LOT of different ways to go with lifts.
