Newbie wit a Question - Land Rovers Only

Hey.. I'm new to this forum so i would just like to say " HI " to anyone who reads this.

I have a problem and i was wondering if anyone could help me out. I recently purchased a 94 Disco and a month after i bought it, it stopped starting. The mechanic said that my distributor is in pretty bad shape. I've look just about anywhere and i can't find one for a decent price.

Can anyone help me out with this? Thanks in advance.

are good places to start, maybe Ebay could also be helpful.
LR parts are expensive but often the dealership is not so far off the aftermarket guys and you don't need to worry about shipping.

Thanks for the help guys. I checked out all 3 links but i only found one at www.roversnorth.com for 599.00. That's still a little bit over my price range so i'm open to more options.

There is a guy Will tillery( spelling may be wrong) on www.discoweb.org...always parting out rovers.... Also on this site get a hold of Paul Grant, he parts out rovers also.. If that doesn't work try www.pikespeakrovers.com is another place.. give them a call in the morning and see what they can do for you!

Two thoughts, first find out from the mechanic why he thinks the distributor is in need of replacement and sewcond go for a guaranteed used one, if needed, from a shop that sells used parts.

Before you go spending money x2 on questioning why mechanic thinks it needs distributor.

There's a boatload of things that could cause it not to start. Basics are a) is it getting fuel? b) does it have spark?

Just to give you an idea of possibilities it could be related to: fuel pump, fuel filter, plugged fuel line, fuel temp sensor, stepper motor, coils, distributor cap, rotor, plugs, wires, fuses, relays, wire connections, timing, timing chain, etc. I think 94 also has an amplifier on the distributor, these cook and puke, which is why you can get relocation kits for them to move them away from engine heat. Has he eliminated all these as a possibility?

Also, if the guy is adamant it's the distributor, again find out why? You may think about taking it to someone who repairs distributors and having them check it before you start spending money, could be it just needs a cheap fix.

Ignition Amplifiers do go bad, but not nearly as often as those selling relocation kits would have you believe.
The advance weights inside the distributor can freeze up, but a carefull lube and freeing up can fix that. That problem won't keep an engine from starting or running, just gives you nothing in the way of umph when accelerating.
The leads from the pickup unit to the connection on the side of the distributor body can break from the constant flexing of the breaker plate.
I bought a flat assed new distributor off ebay, $80 if my memory serves me correctly. Went to install it on a new engine and no go. Swaped out the amp to no avail, and it turned out to be the pickup leads. The guy I got it from took all the used parts removed from customer's vehicles at the dealership where he worked and sold them on ebay. Easy fix; new pickup coil.

I liked the way you called it 'Stopped starting'. That beats 'Started Stopping', at least you don't get so far away from home. Sorry, my sick humor.

I went down to the shop today to take a look at it and the pickup plate under the rotor looks a little weird. The plastic part with the two wires is moving around and seems to be broken. I don't know much about distributors but i have a feeling that's the problem. Anybody else? I also saw that when the the mechanic was fiddling around with the rotor, the shaft moved up a little but never went back down. I dunno what to think abou that?

Arite.. So heres a new update.
I had the distributor removed and i took it to a couple of places to get it checked out. All of the shops said that it was too far gone to be repaired.
So basically now i have 2 options
1. Get a new distributor for an affordable price
2. Get rid of the car because my dad is getting impatient
