Default Noise

I am new to the forum. I recently acquired a 1996 Discovery SD. When I am driving with the truck in gear I hear a high pitched whine. It completely goes away when I let off of the gas pedal. When I reapply pressure it returns. It seems to be coming from the front of the truck but I am not sure. No pressure on the gas, no whine. It seems to worsen slightly when running at higher speeds. It is very anoying. It is a 5 speed. Any suggestions? For many years I have wanted a Land Rover and Harley, now I have both but am immediately concerned over parts prices. I almost had a heart attach when I had to replace the master cyl and brake sensors. I replaced the sensors myself, pretty straight forward but too expensive. Any other common problems I should know about.? The truck is not my primary means of transportation.

I have a 96 5-speed as well. I have 118k on it. She has always sounded like that, been 50k since I have owned her. I would however change your transmission/transfer case oil. This may quiet her a little. Also change your diff. fluid. Don't worry about it. I have only spent about $1200.00 in parts on her in the 4yrs I have owned her. I have not changed the brake sensors yet, I can deal with the light! I just can't see $900.00 just to turn the light off!!! I have taken her on atleast (4) 24hr trips! I have never had a problem. Don't worry about it, do the regular maintenace, and enjoy the drive!!

BTW!!! WELCOME!!!!!

I felt the same way about the light, but I had hoped it would improve the breaking. I catch myself pumping the brakes which actually improves the pressure I feel at the pedal. The brakes are the only thing I do not like so far. My son, a college student, actually bought the truck. He had someone offer him a great price for the Honda he was driving and he sold it, without consulting "Dad". Well after he bought the LR and found out about the price for parts you can guess the rest. He has my Chevy Extended Cab and now I have a Land Rover. I will change the fluids and see if it results in any improvements. I am hoping I don't see any metal shavings! I also notice what appears to be the sound of an exhaust leak on the passenger side. Is this a common problem like the brake sensors?

Your mention of having to pump the brake pedal caught my attention. You might want to consider doing a brake flush and get rid of that old burned fluid, this will usually give you a more firm pedal.Rovers old rubber brake hoses can also cause a soft pedal and weaker feeling brakes.
Hope you get to enjoy the truck.

As the exhaust goes, yes it is common. Most of the time they just need to be tightened. Where are you getting your parts??? Most of the time the best prices are from roverconnection.com. The other good place is Atlanticbritish.com. If seems to be in good condition, it will turn out to be a really good truck. Just do the maintenance required.

Welcome TUCO. What part of GA? One more thing to look at regarding the "whining" would be your belt tensioner pulley. I've had two go out over the years. On their way, they start to make a loud whine, or "chirping" sound. A replacment part is available at Advance for about $21.00. Or you could replace the bearings which NAPA sells, about $6.00. If this ends up being your problem.

Milledgeville Georgia. I will check the pulley but I am hoping it's not a bearing in the transmission or the front/rear end with the sound traveling throught the shafts. I have only bought parts form Atlantic British, I will give the other company a look. By the way, I am in need of a rear bumper and the passenger side plastic cover. Any suggestions on a source?
