So I just finished the replacement of my flex joint, all good, I go to start the disco for the first time in a couple of weeks and no surprise the battery is flat,.
Its nearly christmas so I buy a new battery. This time it bursts to life straight away, really impressed. I go for a test drive and after approx 5 mins I notice a lack of acceleration, it wont go above say 80 kms. This is followed by spluttering and eventual engine light on and engine shut off. I eventuually get it re-started after say a break of 5 mins, only to start to drive home and get the same thing happen again. I managed to get it home and now I replaced the fuel filter, incase it was blocked... old... I also bought new plugs. I just went for a little test drive and its starting to splutter again. Its real anoying. Any suggestions please, ![]() |

Something very similar happened to mine - it was a bad fuel pump. Follow Funrover's recommendation: check your fuel pressure.

You didn't say what model Discovery you have, but if it's a D1, the sputtering you discribed could be due to condensation inside your distributor.

Hello,
Thanks to everyone's responses so far. To answer your questions, its a 1996 Disco 1 SE7. I have no distributor, so I guess it's probably going to be a fuel pressure related issue. How or what is best procedure to check fuel pressure, ? I guess I could also check out the fuel pump, any advise in these directions would be fantastic. More to the point it would stop the wife beating on me and poking me with when is my car going to be ready questions.... Many thanks in advance, John. cold in Canada, under my Disco. |

Most of the time when elctrical components are about to fold, they can be coheresed to give a bit more life if they are given a good kick. Give your fuel tank a good boot...it may sort out your fuel pump issue. This is by no means a permanent fix, but a simple way to diagnose simple problems.
