Default Oil Pressure ?

i apologize to be redundant with this post, but most feedback on oil pressure issues is for the disco II.

i have a 98 disco I 4.0 L auto. i bought the vehicle under the premise that it needed an oil pump. the more i asked around, i found out that the best place to start is with cleaning out the sump/oil lifter and screen. did that. refilled with 10W/40 (first question, should i use heavier oil?)

the truck has sat for about a year, so after i did some more tune up stuff, i ran seafoam through the induction, crankcase, and gas tank. when i was running it and trying to work the huge cloud of smoke out i got some clatter from the engine and my oil light came on. i shut it down right then and there.

the next day i put an oil pressure gauge on and it read around 25/30 psi all the time. cold, idle, and around 2-2500 rpm.

since its actually getting oil pressure can i assume the oil pump is in decent shape?

since i ran the additive, should i consider another oil change and another look into the sump/oil lifter?

lastly, there have been posts about the oil cooler in the radiator...its possible to bypass i understand but i have no idea how. could anyone elaborate on that for me please?

thanks a lot for helping the new guy

You shouldn't leave the seafoam in the oil. Change it. A lot of people like using Shell Rotella T 15W 40. You can het it at Walmart.

When you use Seafoam to do an induction cleaning, it smokes a lot. It is normal.

well according to some, the oil cooler can get clogged.
i want to bypass it to see if that improves my oil pressure at all...if it does, then i need to clean out maybe replace my oil cooler.

Firstly, NEVER use cleaning additives in the oil. If the engine doesn't need it, you have wasted your money. If it does need it you will shorten the life of your motor.

To bypass the oil cooler on a temporary basis, get a small piece of 1/2 inch hose. Disconnect the oil pipes from the radiator and use the 1/2 inch hose (and clamps) to join the 2 ends together.

Don't lose the "O" rings on the end of the pipes going into the radiator.

I recently use a very mild cleaner in the engine meant just to clean the lifters. The end effect was that it affected more than the lifters, the shit it dislodged ended up clogging the oil cooler and I lost oil pressure that ended up stuffing the motor.

DON'T USE ADDITIVES

shit. that sounds about right.

i guess i'll drain the oil, pull the sump and clean it out. clean that lifter pipe.
put some heavier oil and try bypassing that oil cooler.

sound about right?

You can bypass it to check whether it is the issue, but I would not leave it bypassed as it is need to keep the oil cool. You will need to clean the cooler out if it is blocked. I used a couple of cans of carbie cleaner and compressed air.
