OK- last Dec we got our '94 Disco back with a used Transfer case put in. 3 days later the speedo quit working. Then 2 days after that when it would go slow around the corners, it would just shut off- no sputter,nothing.. it was just like someone pulled the plug- it would restart immediately though. Well since then, after driving like this for several months, we put a new speed sensor in it- didn't fix it. It will actually work after she's been on the highway for a while and it only works for a few mins until it stops and it's jerky ,not a smooth needle at all. Then, it all the sudden she idles higher but then it feels like it has lost some power- like it takes more pedal to make it go the same speed and it seems to sputter every now and then, not too often but the idle has gotten higher all the sudden- almost normal. I know the pipes underneath are rattling when it gets gas, pretty loud- could that be causing the sputtering, but then what about the idle change? I heard it could have been the TPS but we're tired of buying parts that she doesn't need! So the new speed sensor didn't stop the stalling and it didn't make the speedometer start working again. Someone told us that the fuel system doesn't know when it is coming to an idle so it just stops pulling the fuel in and that is what is causing the cut offs, but the new speed sensor should have fixed that. When she first lost the speedometer it would work now and then for a a while and then it completely died, until the new sensor was put in and then it works only after long drives on the highway.
I'm also tired of stalling out in the middle of the intersection! Any ideas? |

Had similar problem and I got a new speed sensor from a dealer. Lasted about 100 yards. Cleaned up the old one ( it was in pieces) glued it back together, checked the resistance (120 +- ohms), hooked up a drill and spun the thing and got a frequency output of around 25 hz. Hooked it up to the cable , ran the drill and the speedo worked. I drove 600 miles straight without another problem.
BTW this was my 97 D2. Hope this is all it is. Old Bruce 97 D1 01 D2 02 F250 SD 4x4 |

i would start by checking power at the vss to make sure you dont have a wiring issue.
you say that the cats are rattling? i have heard of situations where a piece of comb had broke off and would roll around and clog things up in certain positions (like turning a certain way). i doubt it but worth a check. have you cleaned the steppor motor? they can get gunked up/stuck and cause stalling. doesnt explain the occasional high idling but the steppor motor could be having an adverse affect on the tps??? sounds like a combo of problems. there is definatley something vss related going on....something with the t-case install or wire routing. keep us informed |
