so the other day i was driving down i75 going to tech (im a first year there this semester) driving my disco (98 LE 114k miles stock) and it started to feel like there was no power when i was pressing the gas and it started making interesting noises when i hit the pedal but when i let off the noises would stop. so were kinda goin down a hill and im like ok ill let off the gas and coast so it doesnt make those noises, then got to the bottom of the hill and needed to hit the gas to get back up and i was only goin like 35 when i got up the hill so i got off at the exit that was right there. the exit ramp was also a hill and so i used as little gas as i could to get to the top, the light was red so i was slowing down but then it turned green right before i got there so i had a little momentum still but when i turned right and hit the gas the truck simply died. no bad noises or locking up it just died. and then smoke started pouring out of the hood. temp gauge was reading just below half way between hot and cold. got it towed to the local land rover dealership for $125 and proceded to wait till monday when they opened to hear how much the wanted to fix whatever was wrong. oh and i opened the hood while i was sitting there on the side of the road with mygirlfriend waiting for my ride to come get us and there was a little oil pooled behind the water pump area (not good) and one tiny hose had a hole in it, it was one leading to the intake manifold area i have no clue what it does but it wasnt spewing anything. ill pause incase anyone reading this book that im writing here wants to guess what the problem was...............ok so landrover tells me they havent seen this happen very often and they dont know why it happened, but a connecting rod broke and went through the top of the block. they told me they would start working on it right away at the cost of 10k for a new short block 2k core charge but i wont be fefunded cause mines ruined and about 2.2k for the labor bringing it to a total of 14.2k to fix the disco i bout for 9k. oh and it might be mor eif other parts of the engine are damaged as well but they wont be able to tell till they start working on it. so i was like haha no. and now i dont have a vehicle. that runs at least. the other thing is i have been looking for a nice RRC LWB prolly a 95. so my best solution to this wonderful problem thus far is find the RRC i want, take the engine out and put it into the disco (tell me if this wont work) and then take the money im gunna have to spend on buying an engine and put it into the truck i want to keep, the RRC. i was thinking of putting a 350 chevy small block in there or something cause it would have crazy more power and im pricing them much cheaper than any disco engine new or used so far. so thats my story, feel free to give your advice or stories of similar occurences (hopefully this hasnt happened to anyone else) or stories of similar engine swaps, thanks

Why don't you buy a used or reconditioned 4.0 and have it installed, it will be a whole hell of alot less then what you were quoted.
Look on E-Bay and some of the Rover forum classified sections, there are some engines out there. Don't try and dump a chevy into a Rover, it won't handle the weight or the power and to be done right will cost a bundle and then you have a Rover that you can't sell cause it has been overly modified. Exactly...find yourself a good used LR motor that was meant to be in your vehicle. A Chevy 350 is not a good modification in my opinion. By the way, if you do get another LR V8, you will have alot of good parts left over from your old engine - those parts have value.....All the best with the repair or you might be able to find someone to take the vehicle off your hands as is.

I would break up that post with more peirods and some commas. I would also create some "white space" by using paragrahs and eliminate some of the run-ons.
Where did you have it towed...Buckhead? There's another place in Buckhead call Road Britania. They've been very good to me and they will actually call you when they need to. I dropped my Disco there with a laundry list back in May. They called with a price to fix on each item. I selected what I wanted done and they did it. They will also source used parts for you but...they are marked up quite a bit. Other than that, I can't complain. Check with them about installing your used parts. (404) 266-1699 (404) 237-1683 Will Tillery guts all things Rover and will most likely get what you need at an incredible price. I've seen trannys and motors go for $300-$400. (804) 539-5845 Good luck.

That just blow's. I hope you can find an engine for less than that. Is this something an extended warranty would cover???
Aren't all the Rover Dealerships in that area Owned by Hennessey? I didn't know there were any Indie shope in the Atlanta Area besides Bear Valley. That's good to know. Good Luck awdsubs on your quest for a new engine.

Not that I'm aware. But I don't keep up with that stuff. Bear Valley...they only service what they sell, so they told me.

That sucks so bad I dont know where to begin....
I would search the salvage yards etc. for a used rover for cheap and buy it. There will be parts to be had and of course there is always the engine if you want to pull it and rebuild it not to mention tranny for "just in case". I can not believe they would even quote you that price, 14K. For that kind of money you can buy yourself another 98 disco in perfect condition and still have money left over for a vacation (nice vacation).

yeh im off the 350 idea, i might put it up for salvage just to see what a junk yard would give compared to fixing it up and selling it (i think i found a 98 disco engine for $1500 but have to wait till monday to call them)
sorry bout that big blob of words, i kinda just make my sentences keep going and going, sometimes they get commas and sometimes they dont, but when they do its usually where there should have been a period, oh well i also think i found a good candidate for my RRC, its a 92' with 85k and it looks really nice and clean, it is a SWB obviously since its a 92 but my auto trader search found all of 6 RRCs in a 200 mile radius of my zip so i cant be too picky. i also found a parts car i would like to get (89' RRC 222k for $500) but its really far away and is crazy cheap so itl prolly disappear fast. the disco is sitting in my driveway now, i want to find the hole in the block but i dont think its visible, now i just have to drive my dads 02' 2500 Avalanche 8.1L with chip and flowmaster, also 6" lift running 33s if I need to go anywhere, thanks for the sympathy and i hope this post was easier to read than the first, mostly due to the spacing since my sentence structure did not improve at all |

Unfortunately, all the Rover Dealerships in the Atlanta area are owned by the Hennessey (sp?).
But, it is very nice to know that there is another independent besides Bear Valley...Britainia Road. I would call Britainia Road and Bear Valley and there is also one in Marietta that I have heard of: Enzo's Automotive service 2007 Airport Ind Park Dr Marietta, GA 30062 (770) 956-0207 Email: mascowj@bellsouth.net This guy is referenced and lauded at RangeRovers.net. Hang in there man!
