Default Politics...(was Hi lift Jack - where to put it?)

Hi All, In my Hi Lift... thread "Burns" posted a link showing me how to mount my Jack on the front Bull-Bar - a neat solution I would say...

..but in the UK's current politcal climate it might not be so cool - so I've started a new thread, where you can all have a good RANT! This is how my reply would have gone...

"Hi Burns,

I like your solution - but lets talk politics!

In the UK at the moment there is a massive and growing "Anti-4X4" movement - they hate evrey 4x4 they see on the roads - When we're parked up in town they even stick stickers on our windscreens (telling us what evil b******s we are and that we're destroying the planet!)

On one hand I see their point - all the mums that spend their husbands money are all driving around in those confounded MERC, BMW, PORC and Volvo things! They can't f***** drive them properly and cause chaos on the school run! But the "Anti's" beligerently lump all 4X4's together and they can't tell the difference between a "Fashion Accessory" and a "Work-Horse"...

..being a peaceful chap and wanting to keep my windscreen in one piece - I try to keep the front of my Disco (a work-horse) as clean as possible - at least until hating 4X4's isn't so "right on" and they all f*** off and pick on Scooters or Invalid Carriages or something"

My rant over! Now your turn! (I know the attached picture has done the rounds - but it aways make a good read!)

Cheers, Mark HH

I'm with you on the whole "anti-SUV" movement being retarded, however, those Cayennes are nice as hell. Ever driven one?

All the more reason to mount that jack up front where everyone can see it,,,and build up the biggest rig possible. Rub it in their faces.

The socialists, anti-gun-nuts, environmental wackos, anti-hunters, anti-fisherman etc only thrive to the extent we allow them too.

Their strength is our weakness.

Mark HH - I have the impression that it is not cool to show off your money in the UK. Several experiences while touring England, Wales and Scotland gave me the feeling that there is a big segment of those societies that hate anyone who is financially successful and shows it.
In Canada and the US my impression is that the opposite is the case. Kids love to see the fancy automotive equipment and generally aspire to own something similar or better (even as over the top as the Cayenne S) one day. Older people seem to just laugh and shrug it off.
This difference between the old and new worlds is not new and constitutes one of the main reasons why so many have emigrated to the lands of promise. We all know that picking on a few SUVs and their owners is stupid, but they are easy targets. Maybe we should feel sorry for these old world jealous types who don't realize that balance and variety in all aspects of a society are signs of social maturity.

Having said all that, I can't help noticing that the type of vehicle you drive in my part of Canada's so-called "multicultural society" is largely determined by one's demographic group. If you are straight 'off the boat' from the other side of the Pacific, not too rich, you must drive a Corolla. Then there is one group here on the west coast that absolutely must drive a silver Mercedes, a silver BMW 3 series, a Cayenne (preferably S) or Audi if cashflow is down this year. I have watched with quiet amazement as these families purchase these expensive vehicles so that they can park them conspicuously on the street or in their driveways - most of the drivers have almost no automotive experience and it shows. The best part of the equation is that there are endless numbers of 1, 2 & 3 year old German machines available at bargain prices. A new round of Mercedes purchases is now beginning due to the new bent banana shaped models appearing in the showrooms.
There are no negative feelings against these vehicles (or any others, including Hummers etc.) or their owners (I'm happy to say) and the dealerships are sitting at the 'end of the rainbow'.

Anti-SUV???
It's a fad. It'll pass. And even if it doesn't....I'm still driving mine.
We have liberties over here. I'm allowed to drive what ever I want pretty much. If I want to blow through a tank of 2.60$ a gallon gas that's my perogative. What's it got to do with anyone else? IT's my money and I earned it.
I love the fall back position of the ANTI-SUV crowd to the environment. Give it a rest with the global warming debate. Just 30 years ago the scientist were all talking about the pending ICE AGE!

I don't even think of my Landies as SUVs. That term has been spade, nuetered, watered down, whatever analogy you want to place.
My Landies are Offroad vehicles. Even if they long to get off road more than I can get them to.

Sorry about the RANT!

Hi All,

Interesting stuff - in the UK the Antis are really having a go at the "Fashion Accessory" 4x4 drivers...

..which fits in with pavel's theory of Brits not liking other Brits showing off.

And OkieRover - you are vilified too - as the "Anti's" are so blinkered that they simply cannot tell the difference between a working truck and and a fashion victim!

Bring on the global warming - I'm rather looking forward to growing Oranges in my garden!

Mark HH - after just saying that people over here have no negative feelings about any vehicle I just found out otherwise! Our neighbour, across the street has a silver 911 - came out of the mall today to find that someone had spat all over the car - particularly on the door handles. Geez, so much for me understanding my own society!!!

I never really had much negi4x4 dealings here in the U.S., with one small exception of a flyer on my RRC up in VT in a college parking lot, oh shocking.. I know. I do find it funny that the SUV market gets a blast here & there yet pick-up trucks are free & clear, even the 6 wheelers. At least from the moaning & bitching I have heard from folks. After reading the UK LR mags & hearing horror stories about the tree huggers over there. I am shocked how intensely this became the flavor of the month there.. I bet it comes here eventually..
