Power steering fluid???

My 97 D1 seems to be very low on power steering fluid. Also, has that whining noise when you turn the steering wheel. Was about to just put in regular power steering fluid and figured I would check with you all before I do anything.

Any suggestions???

I heard from mechanic just to use reg fluid

I would suggest you drain out the old burned fluid replacing it with one bottle of Lucas power steering additive and Vavoline's synthetic power steering fluid. It should quiet down your punp and give you many more years of use.

My D1s take automatic transmission fluid for power steering. Not sure on D2s.

I would take a look for cracks/holes in the lines and change them out if they are leaking. Then I would use the synthetic fluid like Disco Mike stated.

before you put in the synthetic, top off the fluid if there is leaks

if the box and the lines are leaking then keep it filled with atf fluid until you get a chance to fix it.

if its filled and its till making noise especially after you turn the wheels a few times and run the vehicle then try what mike said. it should do the job until you get it fixed.

its actually ACE fluid. Active cornering enhancement fluid. its greenish when its new.

" Texaco Cold Climate PAS fluid 14315 or GM Part # 12345866, 12345867 amber appearence".
When either of these is not available, I have found that Vavoline's synthetic power steering fluid works well in bothe th power steering and the ACE.

Mike's right, checked the manual in my wifes truck and the RAVE both say exactly what Mike says above for the D2. D1 is ATF. Mike are you sure you were never a LR "tech" to have figured that one out?

Between being a service manager and a writer, you pick up alot of little tid bits along the way. My concern is I think I am loosing more of then gaining any more.

Going to replace ACE fluid. I understand that I should remove old, dilute, run, and repeat until fluid is clear. I have an '01 Disco II. I am going to use Valvoline Synthetic Power Steering Fluid. Is this correct?
If I also do the power steering fluid, I should add 1 bottle Lucas power steering additive in the power steering reservior with the Valvoline synth, and keep levels at max, correct? Do I use the same process of removing old and diluting, as in the ACE procedure?

The right way to do it is use the correct fluid for the application. Anything else is a maybe it will work/maybe not.
