Default power steering pump check

A few days ago my 94 disco 300tdi started to make a metallic squealing noise when pulling away now the squeal has gone but the steering wheel and dashboard vibrate quite violently when accelerating in 2nd and 3rd. The belt was replaced 6000 miles ago and is still in pretty good condition so i suspect the power steering pump is on its way out.

If my diagnosis sounds right then how can I inspect the pump, preferably without removing it from the car? If my diagnosis is wrong what else should I be looking for?
