Default Power Steering Pump Problems???

Hello all.

A few suggestions before I take this to the shop would be highly appreciated.
A while back, my PS pump was whining really bad, so I purchased a "used" PS pump and installed it. While installing it, I was unable to get the PS fluid to bleed through the pump at all. I was using Lucas PS fluid which is much less viscous than most PS fluids, so I thought that may have been the issue as to why it didn't bleed through. Not knowing what to do, I drove my 96 disco for quite a long time with the new "used" PS pump installed (not working of course), hoping it might mysteriously bleed through on its own and begin operating.

I am confident it is installed correctly. The obvious conclusion is the that new "used" PS pump was no good in the first place. For some reason though I think it is fine, because if it were failing it would work at least a little and just make lots of noise!

So my question is this - has any one ran into this before, and does anyone have any suggestions? Did i just not bleed it properly? Any ideas on how to get this to work short of dropping it off at my local shop???

Thanks!
William

Is it a direct replacement? Some PS pumps are counter clockwise rotation and some are clockwise. The Disco PS uses ATF fluid ,not power steering fluid.

What truck is it?? Shouldn't need to bleed it if it is a D1. Did you kink a hose?

I would say you have another bad pump, did it come with a warranty, if so go for another one. When you install the next one try using Vavoline's synthetic p/s fluid along with one bottle of Lucas, works really well in keeping the bugs out of the system.

Yeah, my dad assumed that his old LR (my new LR) took PS fluid.....

And he had to get everything replaced. You know what goes in there now?
