Default Question about power distribution?

Ok so with my front driveshaft removed I figured that I could still drive with the rear shaft. I have to put my DI into 4wheel in order to do this. Why is that?

Shouldn't I be able to drive with the rear driveshaft without beign in 4wheel drive? If so does that mean my front shaft ujoint problem could be a result of an underlying problem inside the transfercase or rear diff?

Thanks
Robert

yes but without locking the center diff if I understand it correctly it's just like a open diff in a front or rear axel it will put all the power to the tire with least resistance or in your case the driveshaft output with no resistance.

So by locking it it sends equal power to each output just like a locking diff

That is what my friend and I figured but just had to make sure before I freaked out about something else broken that wasn't broken.

Cheers
