hey guys!
ive been wondering in the past couple weeks about doing a "crazy" swap on my disco. ive always had problems with it, and now i need a new radiator, and it just blows me. ive been thinking that, when my motor gives up the ghost, if i could throw a cummins engine on it, out of a dodge. i know that it will involve a lot of fabrication, and custom parts, but thats not really a problem for me. anybody know if something like this had been done to a rover? any input will be good.

I'm not going to say that you can't...but I think you would need ONE HELL of a suspension system if you put a cummings in the nose of a disco. Not to mention, what Trans would you hook it up to???

Engine would be way to heavy, too long and you would have to replace the tranny and t/case, HUGH $$$$$$$
If you want to go diesel look into a small tubro 4 cylinder that would at lest fit into the engine compartment. Mike |

Personally I think the Cummins is an awesome engine. However I don't fancy it for a swap into a Discovery.
First off it weighs near 900lb compared to the 320lb for the Rover V8. It's also massive, you'd probably have to extend the front of the vehicle, which would mean a lot of custom body panels and bonnet. It's possible, when the Jaguar V12 was fitted into the Range Rover (25 years ago+) they had to extend them also. There are several kits/companies who swap in the GM V8 diesel as used in the Hummer. But they are just as heavy as the Cummins. They fit because they are only 4 cylinders long, but are a much wider engine. Many people have issues with over heating. Not too mention poor handling due to the weight in the nose. Also the GM diesel only has 170bhp or so, so they are not very fast, and surprisingly they only typically manage around 18mpg. The Cummins has a lot more power (depending on which year) but you'd probably melt tranny's and drivetrain components. In short, if you have the time, money and tanacity go for it!!! Personally I'd probably stick with the Rover V8, a 4.6 or 4.8 conversion isn't that hard and will give you more than enough power for off roading. If you wanted more, I'd be tempted to look at swapping in a Chevy LS1. The Lt1 has been used for many conversions (even here in the UK). But the Ls1 is lighter and produces 350bhp stock. And will probably see better mpg than the Rover lump. For diesels, well Land Rover Tdi's and TD5's would be obvious chioces, although I'm not sure on availability State side. The 2.7 V6 diesel in the LR3 would be an awesome chioce, but again being fairly new it might be pricey. The Jaguar S-Type uses the same engine. 193bhp stock, but with only a chip can see 230bhp. Of course if money isn't a problem then there's the new Land Rover 3.6 V8 diesel. And I'm sure there are many other diesels that could be suitable, such as Mercedes or BMW. Incidently the BMW 2.5 S6 turbo diesel was used in the P38 Range Rover as a standard engine and known as the TD6. There's also a new Defender engine on it's way in the new year based off of the Ford Transit 2.4 litre DOHC diesel unit.

Cummins makes a 4 cylinder turbo diesel
There is a guy up in Ocala with an RRC with a canadain toyota turbo diesel in it. Its a sweet rig. There is a company that makes an adapter to mate the transmission to a Brazilian 4 cyclinder Powerstroke diesel. Isuzu makes a number of small diesels for their box van line. And so does nissan. |

Wow, What an interesting thread, A Lot of Misinformation here.
The Cummins 4BT would fit nicely in a Disco, and doesn't weigh much more than the longblock 4.0. I had one in a Generator package, and considered keeping it for the engine alone, but shipped it south after Katrina. You would spend alot less time (maybe money too) if you just went with one of the diesels LR used. |

Wooow wait a minute. Did that site just tell me you can adapt a Chevy power plant to a rover 5 speed? I didn’t get to full SURF the site for the managers don’t leave work till after 6pm . but if that’s the case , that’s some interesting stuff. |

Yep, that's what these guys do. Adapters for Chevy conversions in Land Rovers. If your serious, the stuff here will give you an orgasm.
