Arrow A few questions and advice...

Hi from Adam in NYC (with a 96 D1 about to cross the continental divide into 100k miles)

One> Do you want hard copy or can you deal with it on a computer disc, computer, and printer? There are RAVE CDs (ask if it is the most modern and avoid people who don't want to answer emails promptly) and there are workshop manuals. I have bought two of the workshop manuals, they vary in content due to the years and it is a lot of paper.

You might want to buy the Haynes Discovery repair manual although it does not carry the North American Spec (NAS) 4.0 engine (the 3.9 photos are close enough that you won't get crazy).

An excellent reference (for me, not a mechanic but a fixer-upper) for me is another more rarer book:

ISBN 1-899238-19-0
Step-By-Step Land Rover Discovery & Range Rover Classic Service Guide and Owner's Manual
Porter Manuals / Porter Publishing published with Castrol Oil

There are LOTS of great b/w PHOTOS that fully complement the Haynes manual and forces you to the maintance schedule. Get all three and you can walk the walk and talk the talk.

Two> I bought my Land Rover on eBay (Yep!) and except for Atlantic British and a few other outfits listed above and around, everything else purchased has been on eBay.

If you buy from eBay.uk, it has been my expierence that it will automatically take one week via Royal mail and US mail and if you order a manual, it will arrive in a Royal mail sack that looks like a cat drowned in it.(Sorry cat lovers).

US post offices don't like to deliver them door to door and you will have to pick it up at the PO. Dang.

Look around and then get your library together. Good luck on your purchase and other purchases.

What problems you got with your new baby?

Synchros on 2nd and 3rd are going - 2nd is worst. I can deal with it by double clutching as long as I don't want to take off in a hurry.

Rear sunroof, Cruise control are inoperable. (Actuator on the throttle body works when vacuum is applied)

I think the factory CD player might be disconnected or broken - can't figure out how to access it from the factory stereo and I do not have cartridges for it.

A little rust in the rear door pillars and near a body mount by the front of the rear wheel.

SRS light is on (This might hurt the pocket... ) although I could always run with it disconnected.

Oil leaks either from the front main crank or the power steering box - amound other places too
Steering is sorta heavy but then I have got this to "replace" a Chevy Cavalier ... although heavy steering in a vehicle this size is a good thing in my mind (Can you say twitchy Ford Exploder steering) and I grew up in SII, SIII, Defender 110.

Drivetrain seems to have a bit too much slack, there is a vibration @ over 65 mph - feels like in the rear end so it'll probably be the rotoflex. Front vibrates too - time to balance wheels, change ball joints, stabilizer, trailing arm bushings, or steering box.

Other than that I am cool with it - and it does have 157 thou on it. Can't help have a small smile on cruising to work etc

Okay, don't know anything about that.

Rear sunroof: check your fuse. See if you can manually move the window. Then you will know that the regulators are not shot (thats the slidy things left and right;just did that the other day; you can manually move the windows by popping the little panel and then there is a slot you can turn with a coin). If it is a third-party sunroof, there is a inline fuse up there you can inspect to see if it opened up.

Next to the flywheel underneath is the cruise control sensor. If you have a leak, it will get washed with the leaked fluid and any metallic dirt will clog it. A good cleaning and then see what is happening.

If you don't have a magazine nor CD player working right, it won't show up on the mode menu. It may state just "Err".

eBay is good for magazines, about $20. I have a 1996 and the factory radio is a Pioneer system using the P-system.

Nothing that a little sweat equity could not cure (grin).

The clockspring to the air bag is probably bad. Happened to my Mitsu Mirage. Always do something like put dissimilar metals and corrosion sets in. If you want, why not get a old Discovery wheel without the airbag?

Replace the clockspring and the diagnostic should go but airbags only good for ten years. Maybe you want to, contact www.carcannibals.com and see if they have old passenger panel with the grip bar and the old steering wheel with the big old LandRover logo on it (grin).

Number one thing..those power steering hoses always leak. Got mine like that. Changed the hoses and everything good as new. Steering is a little heavy but should lighten up after the TLC.

Look around should you need a steering box, I think Atlantic British has got a sale but first see if you need it.

Over 65 mph dry and 60 wet, it be those dang tires. What witches do you have? I have them Frenchie Mitchins. Next time, I will go with either Nittos or Pirellis.
