Land Rovers relationship with Honda was a short-lived, aside from the fact that, correct me if I am wrong, it was only available with the four cylinder MPI engine. And of course, not available to the U.S. That said, try saving yourself some $$$ and FIX IT YOURSELF! My Discovery has not seen the "stealership" since I bought it, and has never failed to get me home! And as far as prices, you could spend alot more on ford, or for that matter GEO parts! I find the Rover to be a reasonably-priced vehicle, and it will probably cost me LESS over the longer life span of the vehicle. My "Rant" is complete, thank you. LRW

There's always one built on a Friday when they just want to get home. I have a 97 Disco, and so far I have taken it to Iceland, All over Europe, the USA and now finally settled in Tasmania, so it's seen some action. It has had full service history which I ALWAYS check. So far she has had 1 x swivel pin seal a battery, a cam pulley upgrade and two window regulators (see other thread). Not bad really to say the abuse it gets. It runs, nay purs like a Rolls Royce. I have climbed mountains, driven over glaciers and along 90 mile beaches. I guess if I had used it to get the weekly shopping and the school run, it would probably be screwed by now. I would question your dealer, just because it says Land Rover authorised does not mean they are honest. I always shop around. I is imperative that I have someone I trust. My girlfriend does use it for the school run now, but only because I have ordered a new EXtreme 110 to play with. Meanwhile I lumber around in my 1974 Series 3 awaiting it's arival. Some things are built to last.....
P.S. I'd get the parts from the UK and fit it your self, probaby do it for a couple of hundred bucks. |

If you bought the truck as "certified pre-owned' they should have made an inspection/fix of everything wrong with the truck.Besides that you get limited extended warranty service that is either the remaining of the factory warranty, or extra warranty that starts counting by the time you purchased the Disco,(don't remember that detail specifically though, but indeed I remember reading about it somewhere). So the bottom line is that you should have this dealt with and seriously discussed with the dealership you bought the Disco from. That book should be required reading for all Land Rover owners. Of course, so should the "Owners Manual" and the vehicle specific "Repair Manual". But anyway, it says in chapter 5: "The agreement was signed in the summer of 1993 and the Honda Crossroad - a 3.9-litre V8i automatic Discovery available with either three or five doors - went on sale in November. Although Honda predicted sales of just 1,200 a year in Japan, the vast size of that country's 4 x 4 market suggested that demand would in fact be considerably higher. However, the Honda Crossroad had only been on sale for three months when the Rover Group was sold to BMW of germany, and it was not long before a piqued Honda began unravelling the ties it had established at the end of the 1970s. While the Crossroad was not among the early casualities, it remains to be seen whether this badge-engineered vehicle has a long trem future." I was wrong about the 2.0 MPI, it was used in other markets. Beat Me! LRW

I am SO with you on everything you wrote about your "rolling money pit". I bought a '98 Discovery last June (with 62,000 miles), and have thus far dumped $3500+ in it. Every time I turn around it's something else, and most of my issues have been electrical, so diagnosing costs almost as much as the parts themselves. I had the entire vehicle checked out at a LR dealership prior to purchase, and they found nothing wrong with it, plus the only warranty I could get was for just powertrain, and that cost me an arm and a leg, so I'm screwed.I have gone back to the selling dealership numerous times to complain, filed with the Better Business Bureau, and have posted my feelings on several complaint web sites. At least venting makes me feel a little better, but like you, my checkbook is in serious (and continuous) pain, and I am SO over it. I've finally come to the realization that I am NOT a LR person - I need something reliable instead of waiting and wondering what quirky thing will happen next, and how much it will cost to fix it this time.... |

this is how must of us are affording it... AVOID the dealer and do as much work on it as you can. Most cars/ trucks will be expensive when you start going to the dealership to get anything fixed. if you're not a fixer upper type, leasing would be the way to go as with wear and tear, you'll get rid of it before things start to fall part

Dent is correct----avoid dealership at all costs,,they will rob you! I sincerely believe they actually mess things up on purpose. Dent is incorrect----how can you lease a LandRover? Hard to modify a leased vehicle & then hand it back over. Why modify? To four-wheel for real. Otherwise we ARE better off driving Hondas to get our groceries. Truth is, there are for more reliable, cost-efficient, and luxorious vehicles for on-road driving. But LR IS the best 4x4xfar. Yes LRs are great off-road in stock form,,,but anyone who says they do any serious wheelin' in, say, a Disco, and still has their front spoiler, rear bumper, side sills, etc in tact is,,,ummmm,,,stretching the truth of their off-road tendencies. I like the LR3 magazine reviews where they show LR3 "off-roading" on what looks like a dirt road with a few bumps. Woo-Hoo ! But I say to general public: buy those LR3's, Rangies, & Freelanders so LR stays in business !!!

One of the things that I have been saying for some time, is that each year, the vehicle manufacturers make their cars more complex, with additional electronic sensors, modules, emission controls, gizmos etc. What this boils down to, is that, you keep getting all sorts of error codes (fortunately my 91 & 95, doesn't have any of that crap). It just a fact of life; the dealer has to make money from you somehow, especially, every time you go in to get an error code fixed/cleared or you are un-initiated, and use the dealer to do your repairs; usually by the apprentices'.
