Serpintine Belt - Land Rovers Only

Time to change the belt on the '96. Went down to the local auto parts store and they have two to choose from w/ a $10 difference in price...........anyone w/ a recommended brand out there? Who's the OEM?

Oh, and is there a link with tips for the process?

Not knowing what brands they are selling, when in doubt, ask them for their feed back.

I've ran the cheap ones, the OEM ones and the Napa brand (Dayco, I think??). It's seems they all get a little squeek after about 8-10k miles. Yet, the Napa brand I have on now is not showing cracks like the others, it just squeeks at start-up. I'll replace it next week.

If your tensioner is good, it must be a dirty pulley causing the belt to squeak, cause blets down squeak for no reason. A build up on the pulley will cause this and needs to be cleaned with the belt of using carb cleaner to cut the slippage.

To me, the belt looks to have a sheen to it. Almost like wax paper. Not sure what causes it.

Belts get glazed up from slippy on the pulleys, usually cause there is stuff on them. Heat from slippage and that glaze cause the squeak, some people but on belt dressing or spray on WD40 thinking it will clean up the problem when in fact it usually adds to the problem.

belts dont start to chirp after eight grand unless you put them on wrong.

As they start to naturally stretch and are on the wrong pulley or the wrong set up they start to do weird things and make noise. Trust me seen them on older D1s and I did it to a D2 once.

only after the belt starts to loosen up does it start to chirp.

May want to replace the tensioner if you are having that sort of problems at 8000 miles. Rovers are know to have questionable tensioners.

dont be an idiot like me and brake a blade off the fan removing the belt. Dealers generally dont cary them, generic replacements are hard to find, and still $75 at AB. I just take off the fan clutch and fan assembly now. Only takes a second and ensures no brakage.

P.S. its a very long and frustrating story involving my own stupidity, exasperated by a mess up at AB, a delayed family vacation, etc.
