Not a great idea to give the Prius Greenie crowd this type of ammo against SUV/offroader types. This is a public board.
I don't mean to bring it down... but cats are there for a reason.

I'm worried about our image as off road drivers wanting to keep access to trails. We end up looking like a group who cannot regulate themselves, like the people who create their own paths on sensitive terrain destroying the surrounding environment and getting trails closed to vehicle access. Not trying to bug you, just showing the thought process of those who would want us out of the back country. Thanks man!

Yeah, not a good idea to hack the cats off anything, not unless the truck has been coughing like its running rich or something. Now, me I have an excuse on my RRC, one cat is blown, it had done that on its own, like the material in the cat has completely blown out the tail pipe. The other one is still intact. Eventually, I will hack them both off, and get replacement high flow cats.
Plus, with almost no back pressure in your exhaust, I would watch it. It is liable to cause a burnt valve or two. I have seen it happen.

Lazerusrm: help me understand your logic here.... you disabled the emissions system on your disco so you can drive at 80 mph??? Why?
Here's a suggestion from an old guy - replace the stock cats with new ones (obviously you can do the work yourself) and drive a little slower in your LR. Buy yourself a sports car for fast driving. Am I out of line? |

Where he comes from, gutting the cats is a good thing. Encouraged even. Where he comes from, we try to go as fast as we can while making it as efficient as possible. We are turbocharged import guys. Its hard for me to not modify mine, but I leave it be. If I had the older one, I would be at about the same point as he is. We modify what we drive, no matter what kind of car it is. Guys like us will even buy something nobody wants sometimes just to have our way with it. Just because we want to see if it will hold up to this or that, and no we don't care if it wasn't made for it. I'm not trying to justify this, rather I would like to explain it to the Rover crowd. I am part of both kinds of boards and have noticed the difference. It is not good to be pointed out as a group as people who hurt the environment by any means, but its hard to know how to feel when the performance parts all say "off road use only". Most performance oriented vehicles using said parts aren't using cats either most likely.

i have to drive that fast, or i'll get ran over by the people behind me. and the semi trucks will pass me. I don't drive any faster than other people on the road.
![]() I still have a muffler and full exhaust on the truck, so i'm not too worried about a valve etc. So results so far? 40 miles better per tank. It seems like 1.5 - 2 MPG better at this point. http://ourcivilisation.com/aginatur/moregw.htm |

Idea, tell me if anyone has done it:
Cut out stock cats, weld in tubes Cut out stock muffler, put in high flow performance cat. replace "resonator" or what ever the 2nd muffler is with a 40 series Flowmaster Anyone done it? We have just instituted a "smog" test for all vehicles newer than 94. Gotta keep my Cats, but want better performance.

Yes, Lazerusrm & Evil_Speedracer, I do remember (and understand) what it's like to be young and testosterone soaked. I also appreciate that there are cheaper ways to get more power out of almost any drivetrain than super- or turbo-charging. I once tried unsuccessfully to supercharge a Merc outboard with an old Electrolux vacuum cleaner!! But gentlemen, this is 2007; just because you can, doesn't mean you should (encouraged or not).
Engineers have spent considerable time setting up the fuel/exhaust system on these older vehicles - just gutting the cats is unlikely to be the best way to get more power. Here in Vancouver, there are a number of Discos/Rangies running around with 'free flow' exhausts that, I am told yield good power gains (20hp?)....I promise they all have cats in place. As to being slow at 80 mph, all I can say is 'thank heaven I live on the west coast!' A few weeks ago we drove down through Washington into Oregon and were faster than most at about 70-75mph in our family Volvo... I've never had our Disco beyond those speeds as it is clearly not an SUV (SportUV) but rather an off-road vehicle with some manners - a different type of SUV perhaps , SedateUV?. Sorry to be an old fart. |
