Default Spongy Brakes in Extreme Cold

Heyo,

So my Rover's been doing great but I worry about it in our recent sub zero temperatures. Lately we've had weather where the "feels like" can range from 0 to -20. I've let my Rover warm up in the morning for my drive to work but I've just hopped in and left for a few short trips around town (<5min)

Everything's been fine but today on another short trip I noticed the brakes had become very spongy and soft. Later in the evening I went on another short trip and the brakes had become even weaker.

It feels exactly like brake fading, but it's freezing cold outside so they're definitely not warm.

I'm not used to super cold weather so I'm not sure if this is just a cold weather thing or what. The internet has said it could be water in the brake fluid that could have frozen.

I'm worried because I have a 30 min/20 mile drive to work tomorrow on the interstate and I'd rather not go if I don't have brakes.

Unfortunately I didn't have time to check the fluid this evening but I will in the morning.

It's been this cold since Tuesday (two days ago) but I'm only now experiencing this issue.

Thoughts?

"Feels like -20", whatever ninja, we have been having actual temps below zero, wind chill -20.
It is either your brake booster vacuum line or the master cylinder, the rubber is shrinking when cold and you are loosing pressure.
Start by checking/replacing the vacuum booster line going from the engine to the master cylinder.
You can check it for cracks, if cracked and in a pinch use Liquid Tape to seal it and then replace ASAP.

Towed it to the dealer. Here's what they said:
Master Cylinder leaking internally-Needs Replaced-$341
Left Front Caliper leaking-Needs Replaced-$250
Right Front Line into Caliper crushed-Needs Replaced-$148
Front Brake Pads (Both Sides) covered in fluid-Needs Replaced-$119

That's not including labor which they quoted at $1092.

So yeah, they're saying the bill will be aaaalmost $2k.

And those parts prices are for the "aftermarket" master cylinder and caliper. OEM stuff was like $929 for a master and $414 for a caliper. Must have been made of gold.

Soooo, best place to get parts anyone? Roverland parts seems reasonable. The dealer said they use Atlantic British. Rovers North seems to be all over the place with some of their prices.

Help!

You can get rebuilt Lockhead calipers for under $60, brake line is under $20, pads are under $75....

Master cyl can be rebuilt or replaced for under $100

Any advice one where I could get parts for that kind of money?

I've been checking the usual sources and prices are a little bit better, but not as good as that.

How many miles on your truck?
For the front caliper problem, you should plan on doing both or you can land up with brake pull when stopping.
British Part of Utah and Atlantic British have all the parts.
If you want some help, send me your number and I'll be glad to walk you thru what to do.

The dealer is the last place you want to get parts from or have do the work.
I got my calipers from AutoZone., $70 each for the fronts + core charge.
Buy the OEM master cylinder, everyone has problems with the aftermarket ones locking up the brakes.
Brake pads are a no brainer, AutoZone.
Always replace calipers in pairs if you can.

What a crock.
MC you can get a good used one for ~$60
Caliper should be about $60 replace both. Or get the rebuild kits with cylinders and seals.
Brake line. The pre-bent lines are expensive. Get a straight length with fittings and bend it yourself. $5
Pads. $30

Good sources:
Rovahfarm
Justin, Lucky8llc.com
Marty(Drillbit) Powell - used parts

Rebuilding the calipers and MC is the cheapest option.
