Steering wheel lock - Land Rovers Only

Anyone try braking the steering wheel lock? I'd like to because if I turn my key back past position 3, it takes me an hour to try and unlock it. Needless to say, I have to leave the key in the ignition. I was quoted $1,000 to replace the steering column..not interested. Anyway, if anyone has any ideas, I'd really appreciate them. Thanks.
