Ok this is the 2nd time I got stuck in the snow. The first time it was because my tcase shifter broke. But this time I am pretty shures its working ? or is it.
I was only in a few feet of snow. And only 2 tires where turning I thought when you locked the diff that all 4 wheels are suppose to spin ? or does it only send equal power to front and back to only 2 wheels? It seemed that only 1 wheel on each side was spining. if all 4 where spining I wouldnt have been stuck. but only 2 where spinning. So I jacked up the side that wasnt spining put it in gear and that side started spining not the other side then I put it down but still only 2 on one side. I tried locking and unlocking the diff but it was same both ways can some please explain to me wtf the locking the diff does? I didnt have winch or shovel with me or even a real jack. or even winter cloths because the snow just kinda came up on the road so I had to dig my self out with a cooking spoon and use the standard jack... Almost froze my toes off... ![]() I am starting to feel like a unhappy disco camper ![]() Earlier that day though it just rocked going on some of these other off road trails with rain and mud.

There is a pretty big difference between the CDL and actual lockers. The CDL (Center Diff. Lock) simply sends power 'equally' to both front and rear diffs instead of allowing it to fluctuate back and forth, or front to rear. Your axels have open differentials in them, so without traction control or a limited slip, it is going to send power to the wheel the spins the easiest. I would imagine your highway street tires don't really help you very much either. (I assume this from looking at your sig).
Make sense? Best bet for you is to get some survival gear and store in in the Disco for your future adventures.

Chris: This happend in Yellowstone NP.
Disco: I do carry chains that is what helped me alot to get out. How do I go about getting traction control or limited slip diff ? Do you know where I can go about buying some from where? I have semi agressive tires. And do keep some gear to last a few days if stuck and flare gun, cb etc... Added a shovel and going to try to pick up a real jack and maybe winch today.

id take the flare gun and just shoot the disco when it gets stuck. No, but really, some all terrrains, or mud terrains combined with either a arb air locker at least in the rear or throw a limited slip in the front and rear will really help. The "traction control" that these beasts have is a bunch of crap. wont do anything to help you when you need it. good luck

Disco96 - Look into putting a trutrac front diff in. Look on EE's site and you will see what I am talking about. Should assist in not getting stuck.
If you put a rear diff in - and this is only my opinion - you should put in 4.11 gears while you are in there.

If you change gears in one diff, you need to change the gears in the other too. I believe they must be exactly the same ratio or you will wreck the axles and/or the ring and pinion. I would not recommend going to a more aggressive gear ratio unless you plan on adding some 33's in the near future.
The other guy is right about the traction control provided by the center locking diff., w/o a locking diff in the front and rear, they can get stuck very easily. I never understood why a manufacturer would design a vehicle which is supposed to be capable off road, without a lockable diff, both front and rear. Jeep wrangler is the same way. Just seems rediculous to me. Rant over. Good luck. K12 |

Remember, though, that once you start locking up you'll start breaking stuff. Look to upgrade your axles if you put lockers in. You'll tear up your stock DI axles eventually if you put lockers in. Selectable lockers are best unless your Disco is purely a trail rig. There are those who run Detroit's and sing their merits but if you are doing 50% or more street driving (most people) then you are better off w/ ARBs. There are a few good aftermarket DI axles out there. Not sure if this is as much a problem w/ the limited slips. I have a buddy who put trutracs on stock DII axles...hasn't had a problem,,,yet. |

K12 is right. If you have different ratios front and rear, the axles will try to turn at different speeds....things will blow up ![]() |
