Default Stuck in Reverse

my 97 sd is stuck in reverse . I think i can fix the problem if i can get below the gear shifter, like underneath the center console. Could somebody tell me how to get all that $hit apart?

thanks

Still need to find out if it is a stick or and automatic. If it is an automatic, it will not come out of park, if it were a stick I believe there is a switch on the clutch pdeal.

Pop the top off the shifter. There should be a circular piece of plastic that is held in place by a metal bracket. If there are a couple of things loose in there that's your problem. On my 97sd this thing likes to pop off leaving me stuck in whatever gear it maybe. Usually happens in the most inopportune times to. I thought the brake saftey switch was just a saftey device, basically letting the trans. only shift out of park while the brake pedal was depressed?!

badger you were right. I was out there tryin to take everything apart and i popped the top off and i was playing with the little plastic piece, figured out that the metal rod needed to be lifted up when the button was pressed...and then found that my metal clip that was supposed to be on top of the plastic piece had fallen...so i got that, bent it a little bit, and it works.
