Default Swivel Pin Preload

Planning on doing the Swivel pin preloads this weekend, I note in the workshop manual, two procedures for checking the preload, one for non ABS and one for ABS systems.

The procedure for ABS systems requires the use of a torque wrench and a special Land Rover tool. The non ABS uses a spring balance on the track rod end.
Can you do ABS systems with a spring balance? Or do you have to use the special tool?

What a PITA!! But, to answer your question, No. You will need a torque wrench.

Why are you doing this?

Default Real-world procedure

Yes, you can use a torque wrench, but the vast majority of folks I know, and the method I use, is to merely set the preload to the point that the swivel is tight and smooth. The biggest issue with swivel preload is to get both sides as close to the same as you can.

After doing 20 or 30 of them, you'll get the hang of it and know when it's tight enough and not too tight.
