Default test drive part 3

Took a look at a bone stock 97 Disco SE. Drives and looks nice. The ABS light is on and she said the dealer told her it was a sensor and to plan on $800 to fix. The rear sunroof was off its tracks and open about 2mm. She said the dealer told her that would be $1300 to fix. She's asking 4900 but I'm guessing $4000 would get it. ODO says 171k but the receipts for the rebuilt engine shows it only has 40k

Anyone know what it would take to fix the sunroof?

Haven't ever done it but I've read the manual and it doesn't look fun at all. A lot of the parts are hidden so you have to take apart more than just the sunroof to get her fixed depending on how bad it is.

IMO I would just keep looking. There are plenty of low mileage Discos out there for a great price. Find something with lower mileage and a good service record especially if you plan on keeping the truck for an extended length of time. Just be patient. Try looking a little further away from home.

Hell I checked Autotrader.com and found a 95 D1 with 77K on the clock for $6500 and I am sure you could knock off a bit on that price. Although I am not sure what price range your in., but with $6500 being the top end there are plenty of nice trucks for that.

171,000 is too many miles, along with the other issues, to be looking at this truck for any more than a couple of thousand dollars. You'll be looking at a tranny and who know's what else in short order. You can do better then this.

yeah, I'm starting to think that I need to look at something else and skip the Land Rover's for now. They seem to have more problems than same year/miles grand cherokees, isuzu troopers, etc.

Bummer.

raymondh - there are low mileage (50-70k) D1s out there so 171k is too high in my opinion. Avoid the sunroof models- try to find a plainjane. Is this your primary vehicle? If so (I'm going out on a limb here), get yourself something that burns less fuel and is simpler in design. When that really good deal on a Disco comes up, buy it as a second truck just for fun.
